seeing through the eyes of scriptures

in the Adi Parva chapter 1 of Mahabharata we also read that Lord Brahma told Srila Vyasadeva to call Ganesh to write down the Mahabharata while it was dictated by Srila Vyasadeva himself http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m01/m01002.htm

so before reading Mahabharata we offer our humble obaisences to Lord Sri Krsna ,Lord Brahma , Srilla Vyasadeva and Sri Ganesh and Vaisampayana and Maharaja Janamajaya

May the Personality of Godhead in His incarnation as Vyāsadeva protect me from all kinds of ignorance resulting from the absence of Vedic knowledge. May Lord Buddhadeva protect me from activities opposed to Vedic principles and from laziness that causes one to madly forget the Vedic principles of knowledge and ritualistic action. May Kalkideva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who appeared as an incarnation to protect religious principles, protect me from the dirt of the Age of Kali.

I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, whose lotus feet are always held by Ganesa upon the pair of
tumuli protruding from his elephant head in order to obtain power for his function of destroying all
the obstacles on the path of progress of the three worlds.

The Mahabharata was spoken by the sage Vaisampayana to Maharaja Janmejaya during the fire sacrifice he did to kill all the snakes in the Universe, after his father Pariksit Maharaja was bitten by the snake Taksaka ,actually not bitten his very breath set Pariksit Maharaja on fire , it is interesting to know that Taksaka in Satya Yuga also tried to kill Prahlada Maharaja under the instruction of Hiranyakasipu this is explained in Narasimha Purana but not even a hair of Prahlada Maharaja body was touched or harmed due to Lord Narasimhadevas protection. Now Pariksit was not unprotected by Sri Krsna because He personally protected Pariksit in the womb of Uttara when Asvathamam threw a brahmastra at Uttaras womb .But Krsna wanted Pariksit Maharaja to go back to his Supreme abode, after all this material world is but a temporary manifestation of Sri Krsnas illusory energy so why should such a great devotee remain here? Maharaja Janmejaya was eager to hear about his grandfather Arjunas glories actually rather his great grandfather as Abhumanyu was the son of Arjuna and Draupadi i .Modern scholars wrongly caculate that Maharaja Janamejaya was king of India only 3000 years ago but the more accurate number would be closer to 5000 years ago give and take .Vaisampayana spoke the Mahabharata to Janamajaya on the instruction of Srila Vyasadeva who was his Guru , just like Sanjaya also was a disciple of Srila VyasadevaNo automatic alt text available.

When Taksaka was protected by Indra from being thrown into the fire sacrifice and Indra protected that envious snake Maharaja Janamajaya was ready to throw Indra and all the demigods and Taksaka into the fire but he was stopped .He was surely angry over the death of his father Pariksit Maharaja. It is interesting also because Fire sacrifices where the Dharma for Treta Yuga still such great transcendental potency was there in this fire sacrifice. Even in Kali yuga when a fire sacrifice is done sincerely it is appriciated .I did a fire sacrifice for Lord Narasimha the day I entered grhastha asrama and one devotee from ISKCON Boston send me a card that this fire sacrifice you did on Narasimha Catturdasi was extremely powerful and felt by all devotees .Also I once did a fire sacrifice for the famous Hinduja family in ISKCON Boston and they liked it so much they invited me to come to their house in Mumbai and do the same . However I had Guru kula Maharaja and his Mayapure boys do it ,instead , later the Hindu family donated large amounts to Laxmi to build the beautiful ISKCON temple in New Delhi

Bhismadeva took the vow of celibacy so his father Santanu could marry Satyavati actually Bhisma was the son of Santanu and Gangadevi .His name was Devarata ,Bhisma was given due to his powerful vow of celibacy and heaven shook and the demigods proclaimed Bhisma, Bhisma , Bhisma (means one who took a terrible vow, for the demigods who enjoy sex life such a vow of celibacy is terrifying ) karmana manasa vaca sarvavasthasu sarvada
sarvatra maithuna-tyago brahmacaryam pracaksate

“The vow of brahmacarya is meant to help one completely abstain from sex indulgence in work, words, and mind—at all times, under all circumstances and in all places.”
(Yagnavalkya-smrti, as quoted in Bg. 6.13-14)

ayus tejo balam viryam
prajna sris ca yasas tatha
punyata satpriyatvam ca
vardhate brahmacaryaya

“By the practice of brahmacarya, longevity, luster, strength, vigor, knowledge, beauty, fame, piety, and devotion to truth increase.”
