West Virginia City Bans Gas Drilling And Fracking
MetroNews
Wellsburg, Brooke County

Natural gas drilling and fracking are no longer allowed within the limits or within a mile of the limits of a Brooke County city.
The ban has already taken effect in Wellsburg after a 4-3 vote from Wellsburg's City Council earlier this week.
Wellsburg Mayor Sue Simonetti cast the deciding vote Tuesday night since, two Council members were absent because of illnesses.  "Once the water source is gone, it is done, so we have to protect the residents and our water supply," the mayor said of the decision.
Officials with Chesapeake Energy had objected to the proposed ban and are expected to challenge it.
Mayor Simonetti says the ordinance is a precautionary move.
"The gas companies, the drilling companies say that they're doing everything they can to be safe and I believe that they are.  But accidents do happen and once my water resources are contaminated, they're gone," she said.
However, the mayor says there is room for some negotiation.
"They (ordinances) are amended from time to time, but we have to take the initial step.  If we don't do something to protect our residents, then we're not going to have any kind of mediation whatsoever," Simonetti said.
"They're just going to do what they want to do."
An open forum on the new ordinance in Wellsburg will be held on May 24th.

Fracking wastewater devours all life in West Virginia forest

Fracking fluid, the liquid waste left over from the controversial mining technique, wreaks havoc on a plot of land in a test by the U.S. Forest Service.

A study by the U.S. Forest Service concluded that fracking wastewater, left over from hydraulic fractu.... A quarter acre section of forest was covered with 75,000 gallons of wastewater over a two-day application period. Two days after it was applied, all the ground plants were dead. Within 10 days, all the leaves on the trees started turning brown. After two years, more than half of the trees on the plot were dead.

Fracking fluid is made up of a slurry of caustic and toxic chemicals. Each company uses a different blend and is allowed to keep the ingredients secret in the name of protecting intellectual property. The fracking process kicks up a lot of really nasty water that is often dumped, untreated, into nearby waterways. It's disgusting.

New Jersey, which admittedly has few gas reserves, just imposed a ban on fracking, but states like Pennsylvania and West Virginia have embraced the practice whole heartedly. Regulations and rules are fought by the industry with simple platitudes and assurances of safety.

We're heading down a dark path with fracking. It's only going to get worse.

I have been misinformed that the gas fracking already took place,I am   greatly relieved by that:

Dwijamani Das Yes, gas fracking has not taken place, yet. This is not the issue. The real question is did New Vrindaban lease gas drilling rights? http://news.iskcon.com/nod e/2519/2010-02-07/natural_ gas_royalties_improve_hare _krishna_community
and is the gas pipe to the Snyder well going over New Vrindaban property?

On Sunday, dozens of people including members of the Hare Krishna community gottogether in Marshall County to sign over their natural gas rights. They see it as a way to invest in their community.

but then
my  question is then if the rights have been signed away why not stop it before it is too late?

Govinda Mohini This is happening in Australia too. The big companies, greedy for profit and unconcerned about the impact on the enviromnent or peoples health or property are contaminating the streams, creeks and table water with toxins from CSG extraction. All with the Governments blessing.
