Chapter 3. Karma-yoga

TEXT 6

karmendriyani samyamya ya aste manasa smaran indriyarthan vimudhatma mithyacarah sa ucyate

SYNONYMS

karma-indriyani--the five  working sense organs; samyamya--controlling; yah--anyone who; aste--remains; manasa--by mind; smaran--thinking; indriya-arthan--sense objects; vimudha--foolish; atma--soul; mithya-acarah--pretender; sah--he; ucyate--is called.

TRANSLATION

One who restrains the senses  and organs of action, but whose mind dwells on sense objects, certainly deludes  himself and is called a pretender.

PURPORT

There are many pretenders who refuse to  work in Krsna consciousness but make a show of meditation, while actually  dwelling within the mind upon sense enjoyment. Such pretenders may also speak on  dry philosophy in order to bluff sophisticated followers, but according to this  verse these are the greatest cheaters. For sense enjoyment one can act in any  capacity of the social order, but if one follows the rules and regulations of  his particular status, he can make gradual progress in purifying his existence.  But he who makes a show of being a yogi, while actually searching for the  objects of sense gratification, must be called the greatest cheater, even though  he sometimes speaks of philosophy. His knowledge has no value because the  effects of such a sinful man's knowledge are taken away by the illusory energy  of the Lord. Such a pretender's mind is always impure, and therefore his show of  yogic meditation has no value whatsoever.

comments by Paramananda das: This vers is almost the same in Srila Prabhupadas original Bhagavad Gita as it is as in the Jayadvaita Gita:

75 One who restrains the senses and organs of action, but
  > whose mind dwells on sense objects, certainly deludes
  > himself and is called a pretender.

has been changed to :One who restrains the senses of action but

  > whose mind dwells on sense objects certainly deludes
  > himself and is called a pretender.
Srila Prabhupada translated karma-indriyani--the five  working sense organs .Thus the Karma indriyas  has not been refered to by the BBTI and they properly think it is a double meaning , but since Srila Prabhupada wrote :"and organs " so it should be there
We see in Satya Yuga how the wife of Jamadagni was killed by Parasurama for committing adultery in the mind
It is described in Sb 9.16.5

TRANSLATION

The great sage Jamadagni understood the adultery in the  mind of his wife. Therefore he was very angry and told his sons, “My dear sons,  kill this sinful woman!” But the sons did not carry out his order.
Jamadagni then ordered his youngest son, Paraśurāma, to kill his brothers, who had disobeyed this  order, and his mother, who had mentally committed adultery. Lord Paraśurāma, knowing the power of his father, who was  practiced in meditation and austerity, killed his mother and brothers  immediately.
Jamadagni, the son of Satyavatī, was very much  pleased with Paraśurāma and asked him to take  any benediction he liked. Lord Paraśurāma  replied, “Let my mother and brothers live again and not remember having been  killed by me. This is the benediction I ask.”
Note: Later for these offences Jamadagni was killed himself by the sons of Kartavirya Arjuna..In the 6th Chapter of Bhagavad Gita Krsna describes how one must control the mind and fix it on Krsna thus one will be directed by Paramatma and not ahankara. In Kali yuga offences in the mind are forgiven if one is sincere in KC.But from thinking come feeling and willing and action so all these stated must be used in Krsnas service to transcend the modes of material nature. How is explained in Srila Narottama das Thakuras ,Prema Bhakti Chandrika
These are the purports of our acaryas:

Commentary by Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakur

But we see some such sannyasis, devoid of actions of the senses, with closed eyes.” This verse answers.

He who controls the senses of action such as speech or hands (karmendriyani) but remains remembering the objects of the senses, under the pretense of meditating, is a cheater (mithyacarah).

Rudra Vaisnava Sampradaya:
Visnuswami
Sridhara Swami's Commentary

The unqualified renunciate who in ignorance attempts to perform jnanayoga the cultivation of spiritual knowledge is being censored now. In a  strong sense Lord Krishna states: that fool who by forcefully restraining the  senses under the pretext of meditation but is inwardly reflecting on the objects  of the senses is a cheat and a charlatan. Being impure the mind of such an  impostor lacks the tranquillity and lucidity to practice such meditation.

Brahma Vaisnava Sampradaya:
Madhvacarya

There is no commentary for this verse.

Sri Vaisnava Sampradaya:
Ramanuja
Ramanuja's Commentary

Whosoever without first unburdening themselves of all their sins, who without  having first gained mastery of their senses and without having first achieved  self-control of the mind. If such a person pretends to strives for atma-tattva or self-realisation of the soul, with their thoughts dwelling  on sense objects due to attachment for them instead of focusing on the eternal  soul. Then the conduct of such a one is duplicious and false and they are a  charlatan. Any person acting in this way is only deceiving themselves by their  own deception and surely will never succeed in realising the eternal soul.

Bhagavad-Gita

Kumara Vaisnava Sampradaya:
Nimbaditya
Kesava Kasmiri's Commentary

If actions themselves are dependent upon the organs of the senses such as  eyes, nose, ears etc., then how can one practice to control them. One who is  able to restrain their body from sense objects still may find their mind  attached to sense objects. This is due to impurities caused by passion and  desires from past lifetimes. Such a person is called a charlatan. The sense is  that the mind cannot be free from attachment to sense objects because of an  absence of perfection in karma yoga by performing actions without desire thereby  destroying the myriads of sins collected from time immemorial. Until and unless  this has been achieved knowers of the Vedic scriptures call such a one a  hypocrite or charlatan and all the efforts of such a charlatan although  appearing as a renouncer is of no use for moksa or liberation
