Chapter 4: Transcendental Knowledge
TEXT 34
tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam
jnaninas tattva-darsinah
SYNONYMS
tat—that knowledge of different sacrifices; viddhi—try to understand; pranipatena—by approaching a spiritual master; pariprasnena—by submissive inquiries; sevaya—by the rendering of service; upadeksyanti—initiate; te—unto you; jnanam—knowledge; jnaninah—the self-realized; tattva—truth; darsinah—the seers.
TRANSLATION
Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth.
PURPORT
The path of spiritual realization is undoubtedly difficult. The Lord therefore advises us to approach a bona fide spiritual master in the line of disciplic succession from the Lord Himself. No one can be a bona fide spiritual master without following this principle of disciplic succession. The Lord is the original spiritual master, and a person in the disciplic succession can convey the message of the Lord as it is to his disciple. No one can be spiritually realized by manufacturing his own process, as is the fashion of the foolish pretenders. The Bhagavatam says: dharmam hi saksad-bhagavat-pranitam—the path of religion is directly enunciated by the Lord. Therefore, mental speculation or dry arguments cannot help one progress in spiritual life. One has to approach a bona fide spiritual master to receive the knowledge. Such a spiritual master should be accepted in full surrender, and one should serve the spiritual master like a menial servant, without false prestige. Satisfaction of the self-realized spiritual master is the secret of advancement in spiritual life. Inquiries and submission constitute the proper combination for spiritual understanding. Unless there is submission and service, inquiries from the learned spiritual master will not be effective. One must be able to pass the test of the spiritual master, and when he sees the genuine desire of the disciple, he automatically blesses the disciple with genuine spiritual understanding. In this verse, both blind following and absurd inquiries are condemned. One should not only hear submissively from the spiritual master; but one must also get a clear understanding from him, in submission and service and inquiries. A bona fide spiritual master is by nature very kind toward the disciple. Therefore when the student is submissive and is always ready to render service, the reciprocation of knowledge and inquiries becomes perfect.
Now what is different in the JAS Gita :

तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया ।
उपदेक्ष्यन्ति ते ज्ञानं ज्ञानिनस्तत्त्वदर्शिनः ॥ ३४ ॥

Synonyms

Translation
Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.
The self realized souls ,it is one of those slokas I try to remember daily by heart among other slokas that where Srila Prabhupadas favorite, Srila Prabhupada never in any lecture or in his books wrote self realized souls, one had one spiritual master Srila Prabhupadas writes in many places ,though Diksa Guru is one ,one also has one main Siksa Guru ,that is understood to be one and the same ,so why change what Srila Prabhupada wrote .Anther example of this Mayada Vyatikrama overstepping Srila Prabhupadas authority is Bhagavad Gita 2.35 Srila Prabhupada writes :

SYNONYMS
bhayat—out of fear; ranat—from the battlefield; uparatam—ceased; mamsyante—will consider; tvam—unto you; maha-rathah—the great generals; yesam—of those who; ca—also; tvam—you; bahu-matah—in great estimation; bhutva—will become; yasyasi—will go; laghavam—decreased in value.
TRANSLATION
The great generals who have highly esteemed your name and fame will think that you have left the battlefield out of fear only, and thus they will consider you a coward.
PURPORT
Lord Krsna continued to give His verdict to Arjuna: "Do not think that the great generals like Duryodhana, Karna, and other contemporaries will think that you have left the battlefield out of compassion for your brothers and grandfather. They will think that you have left out of fear for your life. And thus their high estimation of your personality will go to hell."
The JAS version :
bhayād raṇād uparataḿ
maḿsyante tvāḿ mahā-rathāḥ
yeṣāḿ ca tvaḿ bahu-mato
bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam
The great generals who have highly esteemed your name and fame will think that you have left the battlefield out of fear only, and thus they will consider you insignificant.
Srila Prabhupada expressed dissatisfaction with the Macmillan edition of his Bhagavad Gita as it is, he wanted everything there to remain as it is even the pictures and the cover, the copyrights are also set up by Srila Prabhupada that his books shuld remain as their are but those copyrights where changed by Harikesa, that is just nonsense, so that changes could be made to Srila Prabhupadas books ,never authorized by Srila Prabhupada .So JAS has chosen to change coward to insignificant overstepping Srila Prabhupadas authority
Lets look first at Bhagavad Gita 4.34 so Srila Prabhupada in a lecture August 14 1966 states : tad viddhi praṇipātena
paripraśnena sevayā
upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ
jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ
[Bg. 4.34]
Now, Kṛṣṇa advises that "If you want to know that transcendental science, then you just try to approach somebody." Praṇipātena. Praṇipātena, paripraśnena and sevayā. What is praṇipāta? Praṇipāta means surrender. Surrender. You must select a person where you can surrender yourself because nobody likes to surrender to anyone.
Srila Prabhupada in this lecture never talk about surrendering to many Gurus ,why did Srila Prabhupada for example not want his disciples to seek shelter from his other godbrothers, if he meant plural ? How can you train anyone in Krsna consciouness if he has two Siksa Gurus or more as a Diksa and Siksa Guru it makes no sense.One of Srila Prabhupadas disciples stayed with Bon Maharaja and he used this devotee to collect for him ..Srila Prabhupada never wanted there to be two Gurus for his disciples. https://prabhupadabooks.com/classes/bg/4/34/new_york/august/14/1966 Srila Prabhupada left us with the translation in his Macmillan Bhagavad Gita as it is ,that is what is authorized ,the JAS Gita is unathorized

Srimad Bhgavatam 11,3.21 confirms the same :

SYNONYMS
tasmāt—therefore; gurum—a spiritual master; prapadyeta—one should take shelter of; jijñāsuḥ—being inquisitive; śreyaḥ uttamam—about the highest good; śābde—in the Vedas; pare—in the Supreme; ca—and; niṣṇātam—perfectly knowledgeable; brahmaṇi—(in these two aspects) of the Absolute Truth; upaśama-āśrayam—fixed in detachment from material affairs.

TRANSLATION
Therefore any person who seriously desires real happiness must seek a bona fide spiritual master and take shelter of him by initiation. The qualification of the bona fide guru is that he has realized the conclusions of the scriptures by deliberation and is able to convince others of these conclusions. Such great personalities, who have taken shelter of the Supreme Godhead, leaving aside all material considerations, should be understood to be bona fide spiritual masters.
Now lets look at Bhagavad Gita 2.35 :
Pradyumna: (leads chanting, etc.)
Translation: "The great generals who have highly esteemed your name and fame will think that you have left the battlefield out of fear only, and thus they will consider you a coward."
Prabhupāda:
bhayād raṇād uparataṁ
maṁsyante tvāṁ mahā-rathāḥ
yeṣāṁ ca tvaṁ bahu-mato
bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam
[Bg. 2.35]
This spirit of kṣatriya was prevalent even, say, three hundred years ago in India. There was a king, Yasomanta Sena. He was the commander-in-chief of Emperor Aurangzeb. So in one fight, he was defeated and came back to his home. So his wife heard that "My husband has been defeated. He's coming back home." So she asked the caretaker to close the door of the palace. So when Yasomanta Sena came there, he saw that his palace door is closed. Then he sent message to the queen that "Why you have closed the door? I have come home." So messenger came and informed that "The king has come. So he is asking to open the door." The queen replied, "Who is king? Yasomanta Sena. No, no. Yasomanta Sena cannot come being defeated. Yasomanta Sena either he conquers the battle or he lays down his body there dead. So the man who has come, he must be somebody pretender. He is not King Yasomanta Sena." So she refused to open the door. This is the spirit of kṣatriya spirit.
So here also the same thing, five thousand years also ago, that Kṛṣṇa says that "You are so reputed a fighter, and if you stop fighting, people will not consider... Especially other commander-in-chiefs like Droṇācārya, Bhīṣma, Karṇa... They are mahā-rathas." Mahā-ratha means one fighter who can combat with thousands of men alone. He is called mahā-ratha. As nowadays the titles are "captain," "commander," "commander-in-chief," similarly, formerly "mahā-ratha," "ati-ratha" were the titles given to the soldiers, fighters. So mahā-ratha, the greatest commanders... So Kṛṣṇa said that "You are recognized, one of the mahā-rathas. So what the other mahā-rathas will think of you? They will not consider that out of compassion you did not fight. They will think that out of fear you have left the battlefield. They will take the opposite." Bhayād raṇād uparatam. "Out of fear you have stopped fighting." Maṁsyante tvaṁ mahā-rathāḥ. "So now you are recognized as one of the mahā-rathāḥ. Yeṣāṁ ca tvaṁ bahu-mataḥ. "Oh, you are known by various, I mean to say, commander-in-chiefs." Bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam: "In their eyes you will be considered as degraded." Bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam. "Why should you accept? Better fight and die." That's all right. Thank you. (end)

Srila Prabhupada commented on this sloka and had Pradyumna Prabhu chant the sloka and read the translation ,would Srila Prabhupada not have objected if he had made a mistake in his own book, so who is Jayadvaita Swami to change Srila Prabhupadas books ,when mother Govinda asked him did you get permission from Srila Prabhupada to do this his answer was truthful no ,so Jayadvaita Swami has no auhtority to make these changes .
