question about Lord Narasimha and Laxmi and my answer

Hare Krishna,
Please accept my humble obeisances . All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Thank you very much for clarifying my doubt! You have made it clear now for me. However there is another doubt - If you go to places in South India especially Ahobilam you can see erotic images of Nrsimha touching the breast of Chencu Lakshmi carved on the temple walls. There are also others but I lost those images I saved on my computer therefore I do not know. The picture I attached is a deity of the couple. Nrsimha is also touching the breast here. Why is Nrsimha displayed so pervertedly like this?

All glories to Srila Prabhupada

Your questions are just amazing. What is the meaning of Chencu Laxmi?Who is She, I did a little intenet research and came on this amazing website about Ahovalam http://kshetrapuranas.wordpress.com/2009/04/12/the-nine-shrines-of-... there it is stated about Ahobilam:

The temples at Ahobilam celebrate their Brahmotsavam in the month of Panguni, two weeks after Shivarathri. The Brahmotsavam draws a lot of people to the town and grand festivities are held for the 10 day long festival. The high point is ofcourse the marriage of Shri Lakshmi Narasimha. It is believed that when Vishnu took the Narasimha avatara, Mahalakshmi was born in the Chenchu tribe. These tribes happen to be the local tribes of the region. Narasimha then married Chenchu Lakshmi and lived in the warm hospitality of the Chenchus. So fond of them did he become that when time came for them to go back to Vaikuntha, Narasimha is said to have refused to do so. The Kalyana utsava is therefore the highlight for the tribes of the mountains.

One particular Chenchu tribe, the Padmasalis claim themselves to be the parent clan of Chenchu Lakshmi, and hold themselves responsible for her marriage. Every year one person is chosen by lot to act as the father for Chenchu Lakshmi and give her away in marriage to Malolan. The Nishchayathartham or the engagement is a sight to behold. The utsavars of both the Lord and the Thayar are brought out as the negotiations of marriage are held between the Padmasalis and the lord himself. Such is the love that the tribes have for their Lord. It is believed to be the greatest honor to give away Chenchu Lakshmi in marriage to Sri Malolan.

One day I like to go and find that place, I like to witness this "marriage of Chenchu Laxmi" as reenacted yearly there somewhere close to Ahobilam. How amazing.

Regarding your question " Nrsimha is also touching the breast here. Why is Nrsimha displayed so pervertedly like this?

Do you remember in Srimad Bhagavatam when Pariksit Maharaja asked about the gopis in the Rasa dance?

SB 10.29.12: Śrī Parīkṣit Mahārāja said: O sage, the gopīs knew Kṛṣṇa only as their lover, not as the Supreme Absolute Truth. So how could these girls, their minds caught up in the waves of the modes of nature, free themselves from material attachment?

SB 10.29.13: Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: This point was explained to you previously. Since even Śiśupāla, who hated Kṛṣṇa, achieved perfection, then what to speak of the Lord's dear devotees.

SB 10.29.14: O King, the Supreme Lord is inexhaustible and immeasurable, and He is untouched by the material modes because He is their controller. His personal appearance in this world is meant for bestowing the highest benefit on humanity.

SB 10.29.15: Persons who constantly direct their lust, anger, fear, protective affection, feeling of impersonal oneness or friendship toward Lord Hari are sure to become absorbed in thought of Him.

SB 10.29.16: You should not be so astonished by Kṛṣṇa, the unborn master of all masters of mystic power, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. After all, it is the Lord who liberates this world.

from the purport to SB 10.29.15

Śrīla Madhvācārya has quoted the following verses from the Varāha Purāṇa:

patitvena śriyopāsyo

brahmaṇā me piteti ca

pitāmahatayānyeṣāḿ

tridaśānāḿ janārdanaḥ

"The goddess Lakṣmī worships Lord Janārdana as her husband, Lord Brahmā worships Him as his father, and the other demigods worship Him as their grandfather."

If you read the 5 Canto chapter 18.16 to 23 you see how Laxmi has also advised all women in this world to accept Lord Visnu as their husbands (Lord Narasimha as well can be seen in that light). So their is nothing astonishing in Lord Narasimha touching the breast of His wife Chenchu Laxmi, conjugal love exisist in the spiritual world..And Lord Visnu and Krsna are the Supreme enjoyers. How this conjugal love manifest in Vaikunatha I have no idea of ,I have never seen it in sastra. But it is certainly there with Krsna and His queens of Dvaraka,Krsna begot so many children with his 16.108 wifes .Krsna showed the example of an ideal grhastha that only has sex with His wife to beget children, though in His form of Maha Visnu He impregnates material nature simply by His glance these are His Divine lilas.

In Vrindavan Krsna also has conjugal love with Radharani and the sakhis, but it is on a transcendental platform, and hard for us conditioned souls to fathom as we struggle as sadhakas to become free from lust and other material qualities. In CC this is described as iron and gold, lust and spiritual love (see also SB 5.18 .8 to14 Prahladas other prayers in SB ).In Krsna lila the manjaris like Rupa Goswami may witness Radha Krsnas intimate conjugal love, but they derive more transcendental pleasure serving the divine couple than if Krsna would kiss and touch them .These things are on the topmost level of understanding. We are trying to remember constantly how this body is not us and act on the spiritual platform. But know the relationship of Laxmi Narasimha is fully transcendental, and just pay obaisences to even Lord Narasimha touching Laxmis breasts. And remember the prayers of Prahlada in the 5 canto to pray to Lord Narasimha to tear lust and anger etc out of our heart and make us non envious, and so on,and fully manifest in our heart .

I hope you understand all this.I pray Lord Narasimha and Chenchu Laxmidevi may be kind and place Their lotushands on our heads.

Maybe you are familar with the prayer of Sankacarya to Laxmi Narasimha?

Sri Lakshmi-Narasimha karuna-rasa-stotra

This was written by Adi Shankaracharya for the mercy of Sri Sri Lakshmi-Narasimha. It reflects the same devotional mood as his Govindashtakam and Prabhodashudhakara, and does not hold any of his impersonalistic teachings.

kāmaḿ krodhaḿ bhayaḿ sneham

aikyaḿ sauhṛdam eva ca

nityaḿ harau vidadhato

yānti tan-mayatāḿ hi te

SYNONYMS

kāmam — lust; krodham — anger; bhayam — fear; sneham — loving affection; aikyam — unity; sauhṛdam — friendship; eva ca — also; nityam — always; harau — for Lord Hari; vidadhataḥ — exhibiting; yānti — they achieve; tat-mayatām — absorption in Him; hi — indeed; te — such persons.

TRANSLATION

Persons who constantly direct their lust, anger, fear, protective affection, feeling of impersonal oneness or friendship toward Lord Hari are sure to become absorbed in thought of Him.

PURPORT

Lord Kṛṣṇa is pure spiritual existence, and those who somehow or other become attached to Him, absorbed in thoughts of Him, rise to the spiritual platform. This is the absolute nature of the Lord's personal association.

With this verse Śukadeva Gosvāmī answers King Parīkṣit's question about the gopīs. After all, Śukadeva has begun to narrate Kṛṣṇa's most intimate pastime, the rāsa dance, and Parīkṣit is cooperating to remove the doubts of others who are hearing or who in the future may hear this astonishing story. Śrīla Madhvācārya has quoted a statement from the Skanda Purāṇa that emphatically declares persons like the gopīs to be liberated souls, beyond the pale of material illusion:

bhaktyā hi nitya-kāmitvaḿ

na tu muktiḿ vinā bhavet

ataḥ kāmitayā vāpi

muktir bhaktimatāḿ harau

"Eternal conjugal attraction to Kṛṣṇa, expressed in pure devotional service, cannot develop in one who is not already liberated. Thus those who are devoted to Lord Hari, even in conjugal attraction, are already liberated .

"Śrīla Madhvācārya then quotes from the Padma Purāṇa to clarify the essential point that one cannot be liberated simply by lusting after Lord Kṛṣṇa but rather only by possessing conjugal attraction in pure devotional service:

sneha-bhaktāḥ sadā devāḥ

kāmitsenāpsara-striyaḥ

kāscit kāscin na kāmena

bhaktyā kevalayaiva tu

"The demigods are always affectionately devoted to the Lord, and the young ladies of heaven called Apsarās have lusty feelings toward Him, although some of them have pure devotion for Him untainted by material lust. Only these latter Apsarās are ready for liberation, because without bona fide devotional service one cannot possibly achieve liberation."

Thus devotional service is not yogyam, or appropriate, unless free from material lust. One should not take cheaply the gopīs' achievement of personal association with Lord Kṛṣṇa in a conjugal relationship. To show the gravity of direct relationship with the Lord, Śrīla Madhvācārya has quoted the following verses from the Varāha Purāṇa:

patitvena śriyopāsyo

brahmaṇā me piteti ca

pitāmahatayānyeṣāḿ

tridaśānāḿ janārdanaḥ

"The goddess Lakṣmī worships Lord Janārdana as her husband, Lord Brahmā worships Him as his father, and the other demigods worship Him as their grandfather."

prapitāmaho me bhagavān

iti sarva-janasya tu

guruḥ śrī-brahmaṇo viṣṇuḥ

surāṇāḿ ca guror guruḥ

"Thus people in general should think, 'The Supreme Lord is my great-grandfather.' Lord Viṣṇu is the spiritual master of Brahmā and thus the guru of the guru of the demigods."

gurur brahmāsya jagato

daivaḿ viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ

ity evopāsanaḿ kāryaḿ

nānyathā tu kathañcana

"Brahmā is the spiritual master of this universe, and Viṣṇu is the eternally worshipable Deity. With this understanding, and not otherwise, one should worship the Lord."

The above injunctions apply to sarva-jana, "all people in general." Thus one should follow these injunctions until one achieves the exalted platform of intimate relationship with the Supreme Lord. There is abundant evidence that the gopīs of Vṛndāvana were highly elevated, liberated souls, and thus their pastimes with Kṛṣṇa are pure, spiritual affairs. Keeping this in mind, we can truly understand this chapter of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam .

dear Radha Krsna please drown my mind in Your lilas, please uplift my consciousness and allow me to never meditate on perverted material sensegratification, or mistaken Your Divine pastimes as such. Some devotees may find these prayers some where on the internet, I pray they may never misunderstand your lilas as perverted material sensegratification, so I am posting them here ,to hope they will be understood by a few sober souls, always chanting the names of your Lordships. Please make Your lotusfet shine in our heart and uproot all anarthas there, and please make me qualified to one day serve you ,under the guidance of your beloved associates.

Chanting 64 rounds is not enough qualifikation for understanding these lilas ,but it helps. Those who have not been devotees for 30 -40 years should properly not read these prayers and even then if they do not chant 64 rounds they should not .I do not often read this, but this is Kartika and the pastimes of Radha Krsna.Who is the perverts...it is you and me, not Radha Krsna, very humbling indeed.

SYNONYMS

vāpīṣu — in the ponds; vidruma — made of coral; taṭāsu — banks; amala — transparent; amṛta — nectarean; apsu — water; preṣyā-anvitā — surrounded by maidservants; nija-vane — in her own garden; tulasībhiḥ — with tulasī; īśam — the Supreme Lord; abhyarcatī — worship; su-alakam — with her face decorated with tilaka; unnasam — raised nose; īkṣya — by seeing; vaktram — face; uccheṣitam — being kissed; bhagavatā — by the Supreme Lord; iti — thus; amata — thought; ańga — O demigods; yat-śrīḥ — whose beauty.

TRANSLATION

The goddesses of fortune worship the Lord in their own gardens by offering tulasī leaves on the coral-paved banks of transcendental reservoirs of water. While offering worship to the Lord, they can see on the water the reflection of their beautiful faces with raised noses, and it appears that they have become more beautiful because of the Lord's kissing their faces.

PURPORT

Generally, when a woman is kissed by her husband, her face becomes more beautiful. In Vaikuṇṭha also, although the goddess of fortune is naturally as beautiful as can be imagined, she nevertheless awaits the kissing of the Lord to make her face more beautiful. The beautiful face of the goddess of fortune appears in ponds of transcendental crystal water when she worships the Lord with tulasī leaves in her garden.

SB 3.15.48: Persons who are very expert and most intelligent in understanding things as they are engage in hearing narrations of the auspicious activities and pastimes of the Lord, which are worth chanting and worth hearing. Such persons do not care even for the highest material benediction, namely liberation, to say nothing of other less important benedictions like the material happiness of the heavenly kingdom.

SB 3.15.49: O Lord, we pray that You let us be born in any hellish condition of life, just as long as our hearts and minds are always engaged in the service of Your lotus feet, our words are made beautiful [by speaking of Your activities] just as tulasī leaves are beautified when offered unto Your lotus feet, and as long as our ears are always filled with the chanting of Your transcendental qualities.

SB 3.15.50: O Lord, we therefore offer our respectful obeisances unto Your eternal form as the Personality of Godhead, which You have so kindly manifested before us. Your supreme, eternal form cannot be seen by unfortunate, less intelligent persons, but we are so much satisfied in our mind and vision to see it.
