Darshana of Mahadeva
tatah prayato dvija-raja-vikramah / kramena yatrakhila-loka-palaih
ekamrakakhye girija-samanvito / girisha-devo giri-raja-murddhani 1
tatah - then; prayata - set forth; dvija-raja-vikramah - powerful king of the twice-born; kramena - gradually; yatra - where; akhila-loka-palaih - by the protectors of all the planets; ekamraka-akhye - named Ekamraka; girija-samanvita - with the daughter of the Himalayas; giri-isha-deva - the lord of the best of mountains; giri-raja-murdhani - on the top of the best of mountains.
The powerful king of the twice-born again set forth and gradually He came to the place named Ekamraka. There on the summit of the best of mountains resides Shiva, the master of mountains, accompanied by Parvati, the daughter of Mount Himalaya, with all the demigods.
dadarsha tatrakhila-shobhayojjvala / calat-patakam shiva-mandira mahat
sudhavalipta vara-shngam unnata / su-torana shveta-girim ivaparam 2
dadarsha - He saw; tatra - there; akhila-shobhaya - by all beauty; ujjvalam - brilliant; calat-patakam - flapping flag; shiva-mandiram - temple of Shiva; mahat - great; sudha - nectar; avaliptam - anointed; vara-shngam - excellent pinnacle; unnatam - lofty; su-toranam - fine arches; shveta-girim - white mountain; iva - like; aparam - another.
There He saw a great temple of Shiva, brilliant with all kinds of exquisite craftmanship and finely sculpted arches. Crowning its lofty pinnacle flew a flag which flapped in the breeze. That temple was anointed by celestial nectar, and appeared like a snow-capped Himalayan mountain.
nipatya bhumau prananama devah / shivalaya shula-vicitra-cudam
patakaya naka-nadi-vibhanga / dadhat samarohati helayeva 3
nipatya - falling down; bhumau - on the earth; prananama - He offered obeisances; devah - the Lord; shiva-alayam - the abode of Shiva; shula - of a trident; vicitra-cudam - astonishing crest; patakaya - by the flag; naka-nadi - of the celestial river; vibhangam - curved; dadhat - holding; samarohati - it mounted; helaya - frolicking; iva - like.
Falling to the earth, the Lord offered obeisances to that abode of Shiva and to the astonishing trident cresting its dome. The curved and waving flag which fluttered in the vault of heaven above it appeared to be a frolicking wave of the celestial Ganga.
tato jagameshvara-darshanaya / puri purareh paraya muda sah
vasanti yatreshvara-linga-kotyo / vishveshvaradyash ca su-punya-tirthah 4
tata - then; jagama - He went; ishvara-darshanaya - in order to see Shri Shiva; purim - the city; pura-areh - of the enemy of the cities of the demons, Shri Shiva; paraya - with great; muda - with joy; sah - He; vasanti - they reside; yatra - where; ishvara-linga - of the sacred phallic forms of Shiva; kotya - millions; vishveshvara-adya - headed by Vishveshvara; ca - and; su-punya-tirthah - very holy places.
Then with great elation He entered the city of Lord Purari desiring to see the vision of that great I~shvara. There many tirthas reside, presided over by millions of Shiva-lingams headed by the lingam named Vishveshvara.
prasada-kotyo vara-toranadhya / rajanti rajac-cala-cela-cudah
amukta-bhua manuja manojna- / gandharccita indra-padarpitehah 5
prasada-kotya - millions of temples; vara-torana-adhya - enriched by fine arches; rajanti - they shine; rajat - glittering; cala-cela - waving flags; cudah - crests; amukta-bhua - pearl-ornaments; manuja - men; manojna-gandha - with enchanting scents; arcita - enhanced; indra-pada - of the post of Indra; arpita - for the boon; ihah - endeavoring.
Great numbers of brilliant palaces shone, enriched with beautiful archways and crested by bright waving flags, wherein men adorned with pearls and enhanced with pleasing scents endeavor to attain the post of Indra.
tirthani kotyo manikarnikadya / vasanti yatrashu vimukta-dehah
gacchanti nihshreyasam ugra-yogair / ya yogino yanti catur-yugena 6
tirthani - holy places; kotya - great numbers; manikarnika-adya - headed by Mani-karnika; vasanti - they dwell; yatra - where; ashu - swiftly; vimukta-dehah - liberated from the body; gacchanti - they go; nihshreyasam - the ultimate benefit, Lord Shiva; ugra-yogai - by severe yoga practices; yam - whom; yogina - the yogis; yanti - they go; catur-yugena - in the four ages.
In that region are also countless tirthas, headed by Mani-karnika, where throughout the four ages persons liberated from bodily identification attain to the highest transcendental benefit of Lord Vinu's lotus feet by practicing severe yogic disciplines.
bindun samahtya samasta-tirthat / kta mahabindu-sarovarakhyam
kunda kta deva-varena yatra / snanal labhec caiva pada vishuddham 7
bindun - drops; samahtya - collecting; samasta-tirthat - from all the holy places; ktam - done; maha - great; bindu-sarovara - the lake of drops; akhyam - known; kundam - pond; ktam - made; deva-varena - by the best of gods; yatra - where; snanat - by bathing; labhet - one can achieve; ca - and; eva - indeed; padam - position; vishuddham - transcendentally pure.
There was also the vast lake Bindu-sarovara, so named because the best among the gods had placed within it bindus, drops of water gathered from all the tirthas. Simply by bathing in that lake, one also obtains the transcendentally pure destination of the Lord's lotus feet.
kashi vihayashu vishuddha-vikramo / vasaya yatrakhila-tirtha-punyan
ahuya tat-ketra-vare varenyah / sasthapayam asa mahesha-devah 8
kashim - Varanasi; vihaya - giving up; ashu - quickly; vishuddha - absolutely pure; vikrama - he who has the power; vasaya - in order to reside; yatra - where; akhila-tirtha-punyan - all the holy places; ahuya - calling; tat-ketra-vare - in that excellent place; varenyah - the venerable Lord; sasthapayam asa - established; maha-isha-devah - the great controller, Lord Shiva.
Suddenly giving up His residence in the city of Kashi, the venerable Mahesha, whose power is fully free of mundane inebriety, has taken residence in that excellent place of Ekamraka, where He has summoned and established all the holy places.
sa ktti-vasah svayam eva devah / sa linga-rupi vasatishvari ca
bhunkte svaya bhoga-varan ashean / divyan yatindrair abhivandyamanah 9
sa - he; ktti-vasah - dressed in tiger-skin; svayam - himself; eva - indeed; devah - the lord; sa - he; linga-rupi - in the form of his phallic symbol; vasati - he lives; ishvari - the goddess Parvati; ca - also; bhunkte - he enjoys; svayam - in person; bhoga-varan - sublime pleasures; ashean - unlimited; divyan - divine; yati-indrai - by the best of saints; abhivandyamanah - praised.
That very lord, dressed in tiger-skin, who expands in the form of his lingam, enjoys limitless divine delights in the company of goddess I~shvari. Yet he is earnestly offered praise by the best of renunciants who are fully detached from the pleasures of the senses.
su-gandha-malyair vara-candra-vartti- / dipavalibhih samalanktangam
mdanga-ghoair vara-shankha-nadair / ddevibhir antya-parabhir adhyam 10
su-gandha-malyai - by fragrant garlands; vara-candra - lovely moons; varti - surrounded; dipa-avalibhih - by rows of lamps; samalankta-angam - body fully ornamented; mdanga-ghoai - by the sounds of mridanga; vara-shankha-nadai - by the pure sounds of the conch; devibhi - by goddesses; antya-parabhi - with excellent dancing; adhyam - enhanced.
His body was completely decorated with fragrant flower garlands, and he was surrounded by rows of luminous moon-like lamps. The atmosphere was enhanced by the sounds of mdanga and conch, and goddesses danced superbly with great devotion.
vivesha bhtyair bhavana purareh / sudhashu-gaurasya harih pareshah
yatha mahendrasya mahotsavadhya / padmodbhavah kna-padabja-bhngah 11
vivesha - He entered; bhtyai - with His servants; bhavanam - the house; pura-areh - of Shiva, the enemy of the demoniac cities; sudha-ashu-gaurasya - of the white nectar-rayed moon; harih - the remover of sin; para-ishah - the Supreme Lord; yatha - as; maha-indrasya - of great Lord Indra; maha-utsava - great festival; adhyam - enriched; padma-udbhavah - born of the lotus; kna-pada-abja - Krishna's lotus feet; bhngah - a bee.
Surrounded by His servants, the Supreme Lord Gaura Hari entered the house of Purari, whose form emanated white rays of nectar like the moon, in the same way that Lord Brahma, who resembles a bee at the lotus feet of Krishna, once entered the festival-enlivened abode of mighty Indra-deva.
sa ktti-vasa shirasa vavanda / nivasa-deha bhuvi dandavat svam
gira girisha ca sa-gadgadena / tutava sahta-tanu rathangi 12
sa - He; ktti-vasam - dressed in tiger-skin; shirasa - with the head; vavanda - bowed; nivasa- deha - whose body is his only home; bhuvi - on the earth; danda-vat - like a rod; svam - own; gira - with words; giri-isham - lord of the mountain-king's daughter; ca - and; sa-gadgadena - with faltering voice; tutava - He praised; sahta-tanu - body thrilled; ratha-angi - who carries the wheel of a chariot.
Gauranga bowed His head low and fell like a rod to the earth in front of that tiger-skin-dressed ascetic, whose only residence was his body. Then Lord Hari, who wields a chariot-wheel as His weapon, with a faltering voice and His entire body thrilled by ecstacy, offered the following prayers of praise to the lord of the mountains:
Shri Shivatakam composed by Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
namo namas te tri-dasheshvaraya / bhutadi-nathaya mdaya nityam
ganga-tarangotthita-bala-candra-cudaya gauri-nayanotsavaya 13
nama nama - repeated obeisances; te - to you; tri-dasha-ishvaraya - to the lord of the 30 principal demigods; bhuta - of all beings; adi-nathaya - unto the primeval lord; mdaya - to the gracious one; nityam - perpetually; ganga-taranga - the waves of the Ganga; utthita - arises; bala-candra - by the new moon; cudaya - crested; gauri - for the goddess Gauri (the fairest of women); nayana-utsavaya - to the festival for the eyes.
"I perpetually offer obeisances unto you, the lord of the thirty primal devas, who are the original father of created beings, whose character is gracious, upon whose head, which is crested by the sickle moon, the Ganga springs, and who are a festival for the eyes of Gauri, the fair goddess.
su-tapta-camikara-candra-nila-padma-pravalambuda-kanti-vastraih
suntya-rangeta-vara-pradaya / kaivalya-nathaya va-dhvajaya 14
su-tapta - molten; camikara - gold; candra - moon; nila-padma - blue lotus; pravala - budding; ambuda - cloud; kanti - luster; vastraih - with garments; sa - he; ntya-ranga - of pleasure-dancing; ita - desired; vara-pradaya - to you who bestow the boon; kaivalya-nathaya - to the lord of the monists; va-dhvajaya - to he whose flag bears a bull.
"I offer my obeisances to you who resemble a moon of molten gold, who are dressed in garments colored like a group of budding blue lotuses or lustrous rainclouds, who bestow the most desirable boon to your devotees by your delightful dancing, who offer shelter to those who seek to become one with the transcendental effulgence of Godhead, and whose flag bears the image of the bull.
sudhashu-suryagni-vilocanena / tamo-bhide te jagatah shivaya
sahasra-shubhrashu-sahasra-rashmi-sahasra-sanjittvara-tejase 'stu 15
sudha-ashu - nectar-rayed (moon); surya - sun; agni - fire; vilocanena - by your eyes; tamo-bhide - the dissipater of darkness; te - to you; jagatah - of the cosmos; shivaya - for auspiciousness; sahasra - a thousand; shubhra-ashu - white-rayed (moon) sahasra-rashmi - the thousand-rayed sun; sahasra - a thousand; sanjit - completely defeated; tvara - swift; tejase - to you whose power; astu - let it be.
"I offer my obeisances to you who dispel darkness with your three eyes - the moon, the sun, and fire - and thus cause auspiciousness for all the living entities of the universe, and whose potency easily defeats thousands of moons and suns.
nagesha-ratnojjvala-vigrahaya / sharddula-carmashuka-divya-tejase
sahasra-patropari sasthitaya / varangadamukta-bhuja-dvayaya 16
naga-isha - the king of snakes; ratna - gems; ujjvala - luminous; vigrahaya - to you whose form; shardula-carma - skins of tigers; ashuka - garments; divya-tejase - to you of divine potency; sahasra-patra-upari - upon a thousand-petalled lotus; sasthitaya - to you who stand; vara-angada - with beautiful bangles; amukta - dressed; bhuja-dvayaya - to you whose two arms are such.
"I offer my obeisances to you, whose form is brilliantly illuminated by the jewels of Ananta-deva, the king of snakes, who possess divine potencies and are clothed in a tiger-skin, who stands in the midst of a thousand-petalled lotus, and whose two arms are adorned by lustrous bangles.
su-nupuraranjita-pada-padma-karat-sudha-bhtya-sukha-pradaya
vicitra-ratnaugha-vibhuitaya / premanam evadya harau vidhehi 17
su-nupura - fine anklebells; aranjita - reddish; pada-padma - lotus feet; karat - flowing; sudha - nectar; bhtya - to your servants; sukha-pradaya - to you who give joy; vicitra - wonderful; ratna-ogha - a multitude of jewels; vibhuitaya - to you who are adorned; premanam - love; eva - certainly; adya - today; harau - for Hari; vidhehi - You should endow.
"I offer my obeisances to you who bestow happiness to your servitors as you pour upon them the liquid nectar flowing from your reddish lotus feet, upon which charming anklebells ring. Obeisances unto you who are adorned by an abundance of gems. Please endow Me today with pure love for Shri Hari.
shri-rama govinda mukunda shaure / shri-kna narayana vasudeva
ity adi-namamta-pana-matta-bhngadhipayakhila-duhkha-hantre 18
shri-rama - O splendid reservoir of pleasure!; govinda - O awarder of delight to the cows, the senses and the land!; mukunda - O giver of liberation!; shaure - O hero!; shri-kna - O all-attractive!; nara-ayana - O shelter of mankind!; vasudeva - O all-pervading Lord, son of Vasudeva!; iti - thus; adi - headed by; nama-amta - nectarean names; pana - drinking; matta - intoxicated; bhnga - bee; adhipaya - unto the monarch; akhila - all; duhkha-hantre - unto the slayer of grief.
"`O Shri Rama! O Govinda! O Mukunda! O Shauri! O Shri Krishna! O Narayana! O Vasudeva!' I offer my obeisances unto you, Shri Shiva, who are the monarch ruling over all the bee-like devotees who are mad to drink the nectar of these and other innumerable names of Hari, and who thus destroys all grief.
shri-naradadyaih satata sugopya-jijnasitayashu vara-pradaya
tebhyo harer bhakti-sukha-pradaya / shivaya sarvva-gurave namah 19
shri-narada-adyaih - by those headed by Narada Muni; satatam - always; su-gopya - very confidential; jijnasitaya - to you who are inquired of; ashu - easily; vara-pradaya - to you who give boons; tebhya - to them; hare - of Lord Hari; bhakti-sukha-pradaya - to you who give the joy of devotional service; shivaya - to the auspicious; sarva-gurave - to the guru of all; namah - obeisances.
"I offer my respectful obeisances to you, Shri Shiva, who are forever inquired of confidentially by Shri Narada and other great sages, who very easily bestow boons on them, who bestow the happiness of Hari-bhakti to those who seek boons of you, who thereby create auspiciousness and are thus the guru of everyone.
shri-gauri-netrotsava-mangalaya / tat-prana-nathaya rasa-pradaya
sada samutkantha-govinda-lila-gana-pravinaya namo 'stu tubhyam 20
shri-gauri-netra - for the eyes of Shri Gauri; utsava-mangalaya - to you who are an auspicious festival; tat-prana-nathaya - to the lord of Gauri's life breath; rasa-pradaya - to the giver of rasa; sada - always; samutkantha - with great longing; govinda-lila - of the pastimes of Govinda; gana-pravinaya - to the expert singer; nama - obeisances; astu - let there be; tubhyam - to you.
"I offer my obeisances to you who are a festival of auspiciousness for the eyes of Gauri, who are the lord of her life-energy, who bestow rasa and are expert in forever singing songs with eagerness of the pastimes of Govinda."
etat shivasyatakam adbhuta mahat / shnvan hari-prema labheta shighram
jnana ca vijnanam apurvva-vaibhava / yo bhava-purnah parama samadaram 21
etat - this; shivasya - of Shiva; atakam - eight verses; adbhutam - astonishing; mahat - great; shnvan - hearing; hari-prema - love for Hari; labheta - one can get; shighram - swiftly; jnanam - knowledge; ca - and; vijnanam - realized knowledge; apurva-vaibhavam - unprecedented opulence; ya - who; bhava-purnah - filled with ecstasy; paramam - intense; samadaram - attention.
A person who lovingly hears with rapt attention this wonderful eightfold prayer to Shri Shiva, can quickly gain Shri Hari-prema as well as transcendental knowledge, the realization of that knowledge, and unprecedented devotional potency.
iti stuvantam * * * utsukah / shivasya bhtya vara-malya-gandhaih
vibhushayam asur anuttamanga / tato bahirveshmasu sannivithah 22
iti - thus; stuvantam - praising; utsukah - eager; shivasya - of Shiva; bhtya - the servants; vara-malya-gandhaih - with excellent fragrant garlands; vibhushayam asu - they decorated; anuttama-angam - the transcendental body; tata - then; bahir-veshmasu - in outside dwellings; sannivithah - situated.
After Lord Gaura thus praised Maheshvara, the servants of Shri Shiva very enthusiastically ornamented Gauranga's unparalled form with sublimely fragrant flower-garlands, and the Lord then became settled nearby in some apartments. [* words lost from original manuscript.]
bhaktarpitanna bubhuje tato 'sau / suptva muda tatra nisha ninaya
pratah samutthaya sa kna-lila / gayan sukhenapi babhuva purnah 23
bhakta-arpita - offered by the devotees; annam - foods; bubhuje - He enjoyed; tata - then; asau - He; suptva - after resting; muda - in happiness; tatra - there; nisham - night; ninaya - passed; pratah - early morning; samutthaya - rising; sa - He; kna-lilam - Krishna's pastimes; gayan - singing; sukhena - with joy; api - very; babhuva - He became; purnah - full.
There Mahaprabhu ate some food offered by the bhaktas and passed the night in that place, resting happily. Rising early in the morning, His heart again began overflowing with delight as He sang songs describing the lilas of Shri Krishna.
pathed ya ittha stavam ambujaka-kta purareh puruottamasya
premanam evatra labheta nitya / sudurlabha yan muni-deva-vndaih 24
pathet - he may read; ya - who; ittham - this; stavam - prayer; ambuja-aka - the lotus-eyed Lord; ktam - composed; pura-areh - about the enemy of the cities of the demons, Shiva; purua-uttamasya - the transcendental person; premanam - love; eva - indeed; atra - here; labheta - one can achieve; nityam - perpetual; su-durlabham - most rarely achieved; yat - which; muni-deva-vndaih - by the multitudes of sages and gods.
If one recites with devotion this glorification of the transcendental personality, Lord Purari, as composed by the lotus-eyed Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, one can obtain here and now the eternally relishable pure love for Krishna, which is very rarely achieved even by the hosts of sages and gods.
Thus ends the Eighth Sarga entitled "Darshana of Mahadeva," in the Third Prakrama of the great poem Shri Chaitanya Carita.

क्षेत्रेर पालक तुमि सर्वथा आमार सर्व-क्षेत्रे तोमारे दिलाम अधिकार ॥ ३९१ ॥
kṣetrera pālaka tumi sarvathā āmāra sarva-kṣetre tomāre dilāma adhikāra || 391 ||
ksetrera palaka tumi sarvatha amara sarva-ksetre tomare dilama adhikara (391)
English translation:
(391) “You will be the sole maintainer of My abodes. I authorize you to do this.
Commentary: Gauḍīya-bhāṣya by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura:
Because after Mahādeva received a place to reside in Ekāmraka-kṣetra he prayed that he be allowed to live wherever the Lord stays, Mahādeva was appointed the maintainer of all of Viṣṇu’s abodes.

(392) “You reside to your full satisfaction in the Ekāmraka-vana that I gave you.
