They are the glorious sons on Lord Ramachandra and grew up in the Asrama of Vamiki muni that is around 100 KM from modern Lucknow, I had the good fortune to visit that former asrama of Vamiki Muni in 1987 while distributing Srila Prabhupadas books with our Vrindavana Sankirtana bus.That bus also had the Sri Sri Gaura Nitais that you now see in Aindra Prabhus room in Vrindavana   
Lava and Kush stopped the sacrificial horse of Lord Ramachandra and defeated all of Ayodhyas Army along with Laxmana, Bharata and Satrughna and Hanuman , they knocked them all unconscious with Divine astras ,except for Sri Hanuman that they tied with rope weapon, they set him free because Lava and Kush had heard so much of the glories of Hanumans devotion.They had anger in their heart that Sita had been send in exile due to the gossip of few started by one evil person .They did not know Lord Ramachandra was their father and their mother Sita devi was called Vanadevi by Valmiki her identity was consealed for these small boys.Finally Lord Ramachandra came himself and Valmiki Muni interfered and stopped there from being a Battle Lava and Kush asked Lord Ramachandra why He had been so cruel to Sita devi .Lord Ramachandra exaplained the situation and Valmiki Muni asked the boy to apologize to Lord Ramachandra who was also the king and they lived in His Kingdome..When Mother Sita heard from Lava and Kush the fighting with the army of Ayodhya and defating Laxmana and Brahrata and Satrughna and tying up Hanuman ,Sitadevi told them Lord Ramachandra was their father and She was Sita. Then Valmiki Muni send Lava and Kush to sing songs in Ayodhya do Sankirtana with 2 Vinas and sing songs to make the people of Ayodhya cry and repent that Sita was exilled .They did just that and Lord Ramachandra also heard of these glorious boys that He previously met .Lord Ramachandra placed His lotushands on their heads and they cried , and they knew of course Lord Ramachandra was their father .But it was not yet revealed to everyone in Ayodhya , every night the 2 boys would sing Ramayana to the whole court of Lord Ramachandra for many hours and the whole city of Ayodhya wanted to come and hear the Ramayana sung from the lotus lips of these two saintly boys Lava and Kusha
