Prema Vilasa chapter 14 and the glories of Ramachandra Kaviraja

I this chapter we learn about Ramachandra Kaviraja and how he became a dear friend and associate of Srila Narottama das Thakura:

Ramachandra Kaviraja
 
     Srila Narottama dasa Thakura has sung: “daya koro sri acarya prabhu srinivasa, ramacandra sanga mage narottamadasa—O Srinivasa acarya Prabhu, kindly have mercy upon me; Narottama dasa always prays for the association of Ramacandra Kaviraja.”
     Sri Ramacandra Kaviraja was one of the internal associates of Narottama Thakura. The two of them were practically inseparable. Sri Ramacandra Kaviraja had obtained the full mercy and blessings of Srinivasa acarya. Sri RamacandraKaviraja's father's name was Ciranjiva Sena—his mother's name was Sri Sunanda.  At first Sri Ciranjiva Sen lived inKumara Nagara. After he married the daughter of the poet Sri Damodara Kavi, he moved to the village of Sri Khanda.Ciranjiva Sen was a Mahabhagavata, a topmost devotee of the Lord. The devotees of Sri Khanda, headed by NarahariSarakara Thakura all had great affection and respect for Ciranjiva.
     Ciranjiva is mentioned in Caitanya-Caritamrta by Krsna dasa Kaviraja Goswami as follows (CC Madhya 11.92): “Gopinatha acarya continued to point out the devotees [to Prataparudra Maharaja]. ‘Here is Suklambara. See, there isSridhara. Here is Vijaya, and there is Vallabha Sena. Here is Purusottama, and there is Sanjaya. And here are all the residents of Kulina-grama, such as Satyaraja Khan and Ramananda. Indeed, all of them are present here. Please see. Here are Mukunda dasa, Narahari, Sri Raghunandana, Ciranjiva and Sulocana, all residends of Khanda. How many names shall I speak to you? All the devotees you see here are associates of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is their life and soul.’ The King said, ‘Upon seeing all these devotees, I am much astonished, for I have never seen such an effulgence. Indeed their effulgence is like the brilliance of a million suns. Nor have I ever heard the Lord's names chanted so melodiously.’”
     Mukunda dasa, Narahari, Sri Raghunandana, and Ciranjiva all lived in  Khanda.
    They were as one, for their aim in life was the same, and every year at the time of the Ratha-yatra festival they used to go to Jagannatha Puri dhama to take darsan of the holy feet of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, to take part in the kirtana and behold his wonderful dancing and chanting.
     Ciranjiva Sen took birth in a vaidya family, that is, within the doctor caste.  His two sons were Sri Ramacandra and SriGovinda. These two sons were great jewels.  Both of them attained the mercy of Srinivasa acaraya Prabhu, after which they went to live in Teliya-budhari-grama. Budhari-grama is in the Mursidabad district.
     Ramacandra Kaviraja was especially enthusiastic, earnest, persevering, energetic, intelligent, and beautiful. His maternal grandfather was Sri Damodara Kaviraja, who was famous as a great poet. He used to instruct people in the philosophy of the saktas. He was also initiated into the path of dharma followed by the saktas.
      After the passing away of their father, Ciranjiva, Sri Ramacandra and Sri Govinda went to live at the place of their grandfather Damodara Kaviraja. As they were living with their scholarly grandfather, who was a follower of sakta-ism, they too gradually became infected with this anti-devotional philosophy, even though their father had been a greatmahabhagavata devotee and personal associate of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Ramacandra Sen became a doctor and gradually he became famous as a highly learned poet as well.
     One day, Ramacandra Kaviraja was on the road to Yajigrama, on his way home from his wedding. At that time,Srinivasa acarya was passing on the road, accompanied by his followers.
     One day Shrinivasa Acharaya was in Yajigrama at his own house, where many devotees had gathered to hear him lecture on Shrimad-Bhagavatam. At that time, passing by the house of Shrinivasa Acharya was Ramachandra Kavirajathe son of Chiranjiva Sen (one of Mahaprabhu's eternal associates).  He had just been married, and he and his new bride were on their way back from the wedding.
       From a long way off, Shrinivasa Acharya saw Ramachandra Kaviraja, and Ramachandra Kaviraja also saw Shrinvasa Acharya from a distance. Upon seeing each other from a distance a deep mood of friendship arose within the hearts of those two eternally perfect devotees of Shri Gauranga. After seeing each other they were eager to meet one another.  Shrinivasa Acharya inquired about Ramachandra Kaviraja from the local people.  They told him that he was a great pandita named Ramacandra—a learned poet and expert doctor from a family of doctors and scholars. Hear all this,Srinivasa acarya smiled, for he was greatly pleased.
      Ramachandra Kaviraja had heard about Shrinivasa Acharya and was eager to have his darsana.  In this way, he finally went to the house of  Srinivasa acarya along with his new bride and were introduced by some of the local people.  The day passed quickly in discussion of Hari-katha. They spent the night where they had been staying since coming to Yajigrama, at a brahmana's house near the home of Shrinvasa Acharaya, and the following morning went to Shrinivasa Acharya and fell before his feet offering prostrated obeisances.
    The Acharya bade Ramachandra Kaviraja to get up from the ground, and heartily embraced him saying, "Life after life you have been my friend.  Providence has brought us together again today by arranging our meeting." Both of them felt great happiness as a result of their having met.  Seeing that Ramchandra had an acute and  deeply learned transcendental intelligence, Shrinivasa was very happy.  He began to make him hear the Goswami scriptures.Ramacandra's pure behavior  which was always in accordance with the scriptures very much pleased Srinivasa acarya, and after a few days the Acharya initiated him in the divine Radha-Krishna mantra.
     After a few days, Ramacandra Kaviraja left Yajigrama and returned to his own village. At that time, the local saktasbecame envious of him, seeing that he had been initiated into the Vaisnava faith. Ramacandra Kaviraja always marked his body with the twelve tilaka marks of a devotee and always chanted the holy name of Hari.
     One day, after having taken his bath in the Ganges, Ramacandra Kaviraja was on his way home when the saktasconfronted him saying, “Kaviraja! Why don't you worship Siva? Your grandfather Damodara Kaviraja was a great devotee of Siva, so why have you given up his worship?”
     Ramacandra said, “Both Siva and Brahma are guna-avataras, qualitative incarnations of the Lord, but Krsna is the root of all avataras, all incarnations. Simply by worshiping Krsna all worship is performed, just as by watering the root of a tree, all the leaves and branches are automatically nourished. Prahlada, Dhruva, Vibhisana and others who were dear devotees of Krsna are always glorified by Brahma and Siva. On the other hand Ravana, Kumbhakarna, Vanasura, and others were envious of Krsna and were solely devoted to Siva.  But because they were envious of Krsna,  Siva himself saw to their destruction.
     “When Brahma creates the universe, He prays to Visnu for success in the matter of creation.  And Siva also submits himself to Lord Visnu by carrying upon his head the Ganges, the water that has washed the lotus feet of Visnu and that sanctifies the three worlds.”
     Hearing all this, the smarta brahmanas, the materialistic worshipers of Siva known as the saktas were speechless.
     Gradually, Ramacandra Kaviraja became eager to go to Vrndavana and take darssana of the holy feet of the Goswamis there. After receiving permission and blessings from various Vaisnavas in Bengal, including SriRaghunandana Thakura, he set out for Vrndavana on an auspicious day. On the way to Vrndaavana, he vistied Gaya, Kasi, Prayaga, and many other holy places. At long last he arrived in Mathura. There bathed in the Yamuna at Visrama ghata, and after bathing, he rested for some time. He took darsana of the adi Kesava deity at the birthplace of Sri Krsnaand then continued on his way to Vrndavana.
     At that time, Srinivasa acarya was staying in Vrndavana. Arriving there, Ramacandra Kaviraja offered his obeisances at the lotus feet of Sri Jiva Goswami and Srinivasa acarya and gave the devotees there the auspicious news about all the devotees in Bengal. On the order of Jiva Goswami, Ramacandra Kaviraja went to visit the three principal deities of Vrndavana: Sri Madana-Mohan,  Sri Govinda, and Sri Gopinatha, as well as the memorial shrine or samadhi of SanatanaGoswami. He took darsana of the holy feet of the principle Goswamis residing in Vrndavana at the time, including Sri Lokanatha Goswami, Sri Gopala Bhatta Goswami, and Sri Bhugarbha Goswami. Seeing Ramacandra's wonderful expertise in composing beautiful verses glorifying Sri Krsna, they gave him the title “Kaviraja,” in recognition of his scholarship.
     After staying in Vrndavana for some time under the guidance of those great souls, and after visiting the important holy places, Ramacandra was ordered by the Goswamis to return to Bengal. Arriving in Bengal, he passed through SriKhanda, Yajigrama, Khadadaha, Ambika Kalna, and other famous Vaisnava centers, before arriving in Nabadwipa, where he visited Mayapura. There he went to the ancient house of Jagannatha Misra, where he found Mahaprabhu's old family servant, ^sana Thakura. After introducing himself, he took the dust from the holy feet of ^sana and prayed for his blessings, which he received. Ramacandra Kaviraja was extremely dear to Srinivasa acarya, and for this reason,Narottama Thakura considered Ramacandra Kaviraja to be his life and soul. A discussion of their pastimes together is found in the chapter on Narottama dasa Thakura.
     Sri Ramacandra Kaviraja delivered many sinners and nonbelievers to a life of auspiciousness as a result of his mercy. At the festival in Kheturi-grama, he was one of the leaders. On the order of Narottama dasa Thakura and Srinivasaacarya he again went to Vrndavana. When he arrived there, he found that almost all the Goswamis had passed away. When he found that so many great souls had passed away, his heart was deeply pained.  After some days in Vrndavana, feeling the pain of separation in this way, while deeply meditating upon the lotus feet of Sri Radha and Govinda, he entered into their eternal Vrndavana pastimes.  His disappearance day is on the third day of the dark moon in the month of Pausa.
     Sri Ramacandra Kaviraja's disciple was Sri Harinama acarya. Ramacandra Kaviraja composed many beautiful verses in glorification of Sri Gauranga. The following song is an example of one of the many prayers composed by SriRamacandra Kaviraja. In this song he  glorifies the inconceivable transcendental mercy of Lord Sri Krsna CaitanyaMahaprabhu  who descended to save all souls in the dense darkenss of the age of Kali; here he also expresses his deep Vaisnava humility, by lamenting that he was unable to taste even a drop of the Lord's mercy.

     “Just see! Just see, brothers how Sri Gauranga has arisen like a golden moon. Just as the full moon had arisen in the sky, another, fuller moon arose in the form of the Gaura avatara, just to deliver us all from this dark age of ignorance.
      His mercy takes away all the suffering of the jiva souls.  Japa, mantras, austerities and other rituals are all useless for purification in the age of Kali. The only means of deliverance is the hare krsna mantra. Mahaprabhu is so kind that he has manifest the nectar of the holy name, so that the souls in this dark age can be released from the cycle of repeated birth and death and a hellish life in the lower planetary systems and experience divine love.
      Whether one is blind or dumb does not matter; everyone one can drown in this inundation.  In this way CaitanyaMahaprabhu has drowned everyone in love of Godhead, but Ramacandra dasa is so unfortunate that he could not taste even a drop of that nectar.

HH Bhakti Vallabha Tirtha Maharaja has written:

Sri Ramacandra Kaviraja

svardhunyas-tira-bhumau
sarajani-nagare gauda-bhupadi-patrad
brahmanyad visnu-bhaktad

yah sri-ramendu-nama samajani paramah
sri-sunandabhidhayam
so-yam sriman narakhye sa hi kavi-nrpatih

Ramachandra, a king amongst poets, was born in the town of Sarajani on the banks of the Ganges as the son of Sunanda and Chiranjiva Sen, a well-known minister of the king of Gauda, a devotee of the Brahmins and Vishnu. Ramachandra was not in any way different from Narottam Das Thakur. (Sangita-madhava-nataka, quoted at Bhakti-ratnakara 1.270)

Chiranjiva Sen was a resident of Srikhanda, whose wife's name was Sunanda. They had two sons, the older was Ramachandra, the younger Govinda. Ramachandra was a disciple of Srinivas Acharya who took the title Kaviraj. His siddha name was Karuna Manjari.

After the death of his father, Ramachandra went to live in Kumar Nagar with his maternal grandfather, Damodar Kaviraj, who was a disciple of Narahari Sarkar. Later he went with his younger brother Govinda to live in the village of Telia Budhari in Murshidabad district. This place has the distinction of being his Sripat.

 

The Kaviraj Title

Srinivas Acharya was so overcome with affection for Ramachandra that he gave him the diksha mantra and engaged him as his personal servant. Though Bir Hambir became Srinivas Acharya's disciple, Ramachandra acted as his siksha guru. Ramachandra also visited Vrindavan where he associated with Jiva Goswami and the other Vaishnavas, receiving their blessings. They were very pleased to hear his poetry, so much so that Jiva Goswami gave him the Kaviraj title. He thus became one of the eight Kavirajs (asta-kaviraja). He wasNarottama Thakur's favored companion for preaching activities and spiritual association.

Paramananda Bhattacharya, an ocean of love, Jiva Goswami and the other residents of Vraja, listened to Ramachandra recite his own poetic compositions and they joyfully awarded him the title of kaviraja. Ramachandra Kaviraj was full of all virtues and Narottam Das' second self.

Ramachandra wrote several books, including Smarana-camatkara, Smarana-darpana, Siddhanta-candrika, and Srinivasa Acaryera Jivana-carita.

 

Ramachandra in Vrindavan

Narahari Chakravarti has written an extensive description of Ramachandra and his visit to Vrindavan in the ninth wave of Bhakti-ratnakara. All the residents of Vraja who saw him were attracted by his physical beauty. When Ramachandra visited the Radha-Damodar temple with Jiva Goswami and saw Rupa Goswami's samadhi, he experienced ecstatic transformations that were a source of amazement to all. Gopal Bhatta Goswami, Lokanatha Goswami and Bhugarbha Goswami gave him their blessings. He went to bathe in Radha Kund and Shyama Kund and met Raghunath Das Goswami there. When he paid obeisances to Raghunath, the venerable saint affectionately embraced him.

Ramachandra's friendship with Narottam Das Thakur has been immortalized by Narottam Das' prayer to Srinivas Acharya for his association:

daya kara sri-acarya prabhu srinivasa ramachandra sanga mage narottama dasa

"Please be merciful, Prabhu Srinivas Acharya! Narottam Das begs for Ramachandra's association."

Ramachandra's disappearance day is the Krsna triya in the month of Magh. He passed away in Vrindavan after the disappearance of Srinivas Acharya.

Ramachandra Kaviraja's full samadhi

According to my FFLV calendar, today is the disappearance day (tirobhava tithi) of Sri Ramachandra Kaviraja.  Today I went to Dhira Sameera, to the beautiful kunja of Srinivasacharya Prabhu, to pay my respects at Ramachandra Kaviraja’s samadhi.  Nothing was going on at the mandir, and I inquired from the caretaker whether or not the tirobhava was today.  She replied that she was not sure, that the gosvami families of this kunja now live and work in Delhi.  She asked me to please return for Srinivasacharya’s disappearance day in Kartik, when there would be a big festival celebrating both Srinivasacharya and Ramachandra Kaviraja.

 

Srinivasacharya Kunja (Dhira Samira)

Since (by the reckoning of my calendar!) Ramachandra Kaviraja’s day is today, I want to tell a story about him.  Not a detailed report, because I have lost many of the books I once had, but a single story which I tell from memory.  I hope you will kindly oblige me.

 

Sri Ramachandra Kaviraj

Ramachandra Kaviraja was the son of Srikhanda-vasi Chiranjeev Sen, and the brother of the great poet Govinda Kaviraj.  His Gurudev was none other than Sri Srinivas Acharya Thakur, who in turn was the disciple of Sri Gopal Bhatta Gosvami.  (According to Prema Vilasa, Ramachandra Kaviraja’s wife, Ratnamala Devi, was also a disciple of Srinivas Acharya).  Govinda Kaviraj calls RamachandraKaviraj, Narottam Das Thakur’s abhinna kalevara or identical second body.  As Srinivasacharya was an appearance of SrimanMahaprabhu, and Narottama of Nityananda Prabhu, so Ramachandra Kaviraja is considered an appearance of Gadadhara Pandit.

Like his beloved friend Narottam Thakur, Ramachandra Kaviraj was the image of Guru Nistha, or firm dedication to the guru.  The following story illustrates the depths of hs supernatural connection with his Gurudev, Sri Srinivas Acharya.

Srinivas Acharya Thakur lived in Sripat Jajigram in West Bengal with his two wives, Isvari and Srimati.  One day while Srinivas was sitting for japa and meditation on Vraja lila, he entered into deep samadhi.  It was not unusual for him to remain so absorbed for hours, but this time night came and went and still his samadhi did not break.

Dawn flowed into midday, midday into dusk, but still Srinivas remained sitting on his asana, his mind turned inwards, unaware of the outside world.  Srimati and Isvari were distressed to see their husband in this state.  When another night came and he still showed no sign of consciousness, Srimati and Isvari called for Srinivasa’s dearest disciple, Ramachandra Kaviraj.  Ramachandra came and they told him,

“Ram!  Your Gurudev has been sitting in meditation for two days.  He has not eaten anything, and his breathing is very slow.  We are afraid he might die!”

Ramachandra said, “O my dear mothers!  I will find out what’s the matter.  Don’t worry, everything will be alright.”  Ramachandra sat near his Gurudeva and began to meditate.  Soon he became completely immersed in Vraja Lila, and saw himself in his svarupa as “Karuna-manjari.”  …”Karuna manjari” found herself in the midst of a grove of trees and flowering vines, and heard the sounds of Radharani’s sakhis laughing with Krishna.  Following the sounds of their laughter, she made her way to the bank of Sri Radhakunda.

There she saw two or three manjaris standing far away from Radha and Krishna and the sakhis, looking with distress towards the water of the kunda.  One of them explained, “Radharani has lost her favorite nose ring during jala-keli! We must get it back.  See, your sakhi is searching for it now.”  Karuna-manjari saw her guru-rupa-sakhi, Mani Manjari (Srinivas Acharya Thakur) diving again and again into the waters of Radhakunda in search of the missing nose ring.  Karuna-manjari dove into the water and joined in the search.  Within half an hour, she found Radharani’s nose ring and gave it to Mani Manjari.  Mani Manjari was overjoyed to find the nosering at last.  She gave the nosering to Rupa Manjari, who placed it in the nose of Radharani.

Rupa Manjari said to Mani-manjari, “Radharani is so pleased with your seva, she secretly gave me her chewed tambul for you.  Take it.”  Mani-manjari took a little of Radharani’s prasadi tambul and gave the rest to Karuna-manjari. Now that the nose ring was found, both Srinivasacharya and Ramachandra Kaviraj returned to external consciousness.

Meanwhile, a third day had come and gone.  Srimati and Isvari were weeping bitterly, when Srinivas and Ramachandra finally came to thier own.  Srimati and Isvari immediately made arrangements for their prasada, as Srinivas had not eaten for three days, and bade him take rest.

The next morning Srimati and Isvari inquired of Ramachandra Kaviraj, “What happened?  How our husband ended up in such a condition?  Please tell us everything!”  Ramachandra told Srinivasa’s wives the story of Radharani’s lost nose ring, and they listened with rapt attention.   “So you see, o mothers, that is why Gurudeva remained in meditation for three days — he had to complete his seva for Radharani.”

The story brought forth a great surge of bhakti in the hearts of Srimati and Isvari.  With tears pouring from their eyes, they said toRamachandra, “Ram! We also want to worship Sri Radharani in this way, along with you and your Gurudeva.  Is it possible?  How can we do this?”

Then Ramachandra untied the end of his shawl.  He took out something that was tied in it and said…

“This is the prasadi tambul of Radharani which I received today in the Lila.  Take it.  By Radharani’s mercy your desires will be fulfilled.”  He divided the tambul in to two pieces, which Srimati and Isvari ate.  From that day on Srimati and Isvari attained bhakti equal to that of Ramachandra Kaviraj.

Gurudev has written in one of his books:

“Narottam Thakur Mahasay wrote,

‘rAmacandra kavirAj    sei sange mor kAj
tA~r saGga vinA sab zUnya
yadi janma hoy punaH    tA~r saGga hoY yeno
tabe narottama hoy dhanya ‘

 

“Why did Srila Narottam Thakur pray for Ramchandra Kaviraja’s association? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to pray for the “object of attainment” (sAdhya vastu), ie. Sri Guru-Gaura-Govinda?  But here Narottam Thakur Mahasay doesn’t express desire for Guru, Gaura or Govinda, but rather thirsts after the association of Ramchandra Kaviraj.  Why is that?  What’s the meaning behind it?  The reason is, Ramchandra Kaviraj is exclusively devoted and fully sold out to Sri Gurudev.  It may be that Narottam Thakur Mahasay wishes to teach through this prayer, that if we obtain the company of one who is firmly fixed in devotion to Sri Guru, then we will attain Sri Guru-Gaura-Govinda very easily.”  Elsewhere Gurudeva adds, “If we hold the guru-nistha-bhakta (devotee who is firmly dedicated to the lotus feet of Sri Guru) in our heart, then Gurudeva is drawn to us like a mother cow to her newborn calf.”

Let us all hold him in our heart today — the very form of Guru-nistha-bhakti, Sri Ramachandra Kaviraj!

The Vrndavana tour of Shri Ramacandra Kaviraja

 

Shrinivasa Acarya had decided to stay in Vrndavana but his disciples in Gauda were feeling very lonely without him. One day in Shri Khanda Shri Raghunandana told Ramacandra Kaviraja gently that since this place had become vacant he should at once go to Vrndavana. He gave Ramacandra good directions and Ramacandra went first to Jajigram. The followers of Shrinivasa told Ramacandra that it had become impossible for them to live without their Acarya. They requested him to go quickly to Vrndavana and bring Shrinivasa back to them. After taking permission from the disciples of Shrinivasa, Ramacandra returned home.

 

Thereafter Ramacandra began to think about Shri Narottama. He believed that his miseries would vanish if he could only live with Narottama.

 

Ramacandra's brother, Shri Govinda, was a man of extraordinary knowledge, competence and enthusiam for his work. As they sat together in a quiet place Ramacandra told him that the next morning he would go to Shri Vrndavana. He advised ShriGovinda to move to a village named Telia Budhari, a holy place which was situated between the Ganga and Padmavati rivers. It was a large and well populated village inhabitated by good natured people. Ramacandra suggested that Shri Govinda live there, for even his maternal grandfather, a very famous man, had often visited that holy place. He told Shri Govinda that his presence in that place would bring pleasure to many of the people and Shri Govinda at once agreed to follow the suggestion. Thereafter Ramacandra imparted various spiritual truths to Shri Govinda and the following morning left his brother and started for Vrndavana. Shrinivasa had gone to Vrndavana about the end of Vaisakha and Ramacandra went there about the end of Pausa.

 

The life story of Govidna the brother of Ramacandra

 

After two to four days Shri Govinda left Kumar Nagara and went to Telia, where the villagers received him happily. The gentlemen of the village came forward to meet him and selected a beautiful place for him to live. They were impressed by ShriGovinda's good qualities and he was very happy to have their kind and affectionate association. Although Govinda was satisfied there he never forgot the mercy of Shrinivasa Acarya. He wondered when the day would come that he would be a servant at the feet of Shri Acarya, when the Acarya would grant him diksa mantra and when he would be admitted into the companions of Shri Acarya.

 

As a devotee of Goddess Bhagavati, Govinda lived in Kumar Nagara, worshipping the Goddess with songs and poetry which were the delight of his many companions who were also worshippers of Shakti. The poet explained the reason for his attachment to Goddess Bhagavati. His maternal grandfather was a shakta who kept Bhagavati always by his side. His grandfather's name was Damodara Kavirja and Damadora's daughter was Sunanda. Govinda was Sunanda's son. Govindaremained in his mother's womb too long and Sunanda was in great distress at the time of delivery. Her maidservant hastily informed Kaviraja of the problem while he was engaged in worshipping Bhagavati. He did not speak to the maidservant but by certain movements of his hands and eyes he indicated that she should take the weapon of Shri Durga and show it toSunanda. That would assist her in a painless delivery of her child. The maidservant could not understand Kaviraja's indications very well. She washed the weapon in water and gave the water to Sunanda to drink. Thereafter Sunanda quickly and painlessly gave birth to a beautiful son.

 

The child grew day by day like the moon. Everyone in the vilalge knew that he was born by the mercy of Shri Bhagavati. As a young child he lost his father and gained no worldly eduaction. His maternal grandfather cared for him throughout his childhood, moulding Govinda according to his own doctrines and rituals used in worshipping Bhagavati. Other people also advised Govindato continue the worship of Bhagavati. They insisted that no activity could be successful without the pleasure of Bhagavati.

 

When Ramacandra took initiation from Shri Acarya Shri Govinda assured himself that since he had been worshipping Bhagavati sincerely from his childhood, Bhagavati would certainly grant him salvation. But as he was thinking this an oracle from Bhagavti told him that if he did not worship Krishna he would not get salvation. Although he was unhappy, Shri Govinda decided to become a disciple of Shri Acarya Prabhu and worship the lotus feet of Krishna. For that purpose he went to Jajigram only to learn that Shri Acarya had gone to Vrndavana. Govinda lamented his misfortune, but he considered the kindness of the Vaishnavas who had told him about his own father, Chiranjiva Sena. Chiranjiva was a disciple of Chaitanya Candra and Govind alamented that he could not follow the path of his devoted father. He regarded himself as a worthless person in this world and lamented his misfortune.

 

Govinda cherished the hope of meeting Shri Acarya so that a change would occur in his wicked mind. He remembered his elder brother whose life had already been moulded by the favor of Acarya Prabhu. He lamented that even though his elder brother had gotten the favor of the Acarya he himself had not. He cried as he rebuked himself and soaked his body with tears. At that moment a oracle from the sky told him that his desires would be fuliflled within a few days. From that very day Govinda's devotion to Radha and Krishna increased steadily. Ramacandra was glad to find his brother in this transformed state of mind. When Govinda moved to Telia Budhuari villae he first lived on the Western side which was known as Shri Paschimapia and later settled in Budharia. In everh sphere of life Govinda liked to depend on his elder brother. 

 

Shri Ramacandra Kaviraja in Vrndavana

 

As Ramacandra travelled hurriedly to Vrndavana people who observed him remarked that they had never seen such a person. They thought he was probably the son of a king from Gauda. Some people thought he not even a human being but rather a deity. When he arrived in Vrndavana someone informed Shri Jiva Gosvami that a beautiful person, with skin as bright as gold, had come from Gauda. They told Shri Jiva that thy were charmed by the sight of that man who was wandering aimlessly in Vrndavana, crying as he enjoyed the beauty of of the holy dhama. Shri Jiva asked Shrinivasa if he knew who the man was and Shrinivasa said that it must be Ramacandra.

 

Shrinivasa had preciously told Jiva Gosvami about Ramacandra, so Shri Jiva ordered his followers to bring Ramacandra to his place. When Ramacandra arrived he bowed at the feet of Shri Jiva and Shrinivasa Acarya and both of them lovingly embracedRamacandra. They asked him questions about the places which he had visited on his trip and Ramacandra first reported what Khandavasi Shri Raghunandana had told him. He also repoted what he had heard from other Vaishnavas and he told them the progress of his own study and the result of the long tour which he had completed to Gaya, Kashi, Ayodhya and Prayaga.

 

From this report Shri Jiva Gosvami could understand the condition of those holy places since the disappearance of Mahaprabhuand  his beloved companions. Ramacandra informed them that the inhabitants of Gauda wanted Shrinivasa to return and both Shrinivasa and Shri Jiva took the request seriously. Thereafter they took Ramacandra with  them to visit the temple of RadhaDamodara.

 

While observing the deities of Radha Damodara Ramacandra fell on the ground crying and while visiting the Samadhi of Rupa Gosvami he was moved with emotion. When he cried loudly, calling out the name of Shri Rupa, Shri Jiva took him on his lap and pacified him.

 

He visited the temples of Shri Govinda, Gopinatha, Madana Mohan, Radha Damodara and Shri Radha Raman and wherever he went he could barely restrain his emotions. He also visited the samadhis of Sanatana Gosvami, Kasisvara Pandita and raghunatha Bhatta although it filled him with grief. Shri Gopala Bhatta, Lokenatha, Shri Bhugarba and other Vaishnavas came to meet and bless him.

 

Shri Ramacandra visits Radha kunda

 

Thereafter Ramacandra visited Aritagrama and also visied radha and Syama kunda. After bathing in the kundas he met Raghunatha dasa Gosvmami and bowed at his feet. Raghunatha embraced him affectionately, and was later impressed byRamacandra's ability to write verses. Ramacandra also met Krishnadasa Kaviraja and other Vaishnavas of that area. He visited Giri Govardhana and roamed happily in the twelve forests. Shri Bhatta Gosvami and others in Vrndavana praised Ramacandraand because of his talent as a poet they offered the title of Kaviraja to him. Ramacandra assited his guru Shrinivasa Acarya in serving Shri Gopala Bhatta Gosvami in various ways. Shri Jiva Gosvami was happy to observe the sweet relationship between the guru and his disciple.

          All glories to Shri Krishna Chaitanya, the reservoir of all transcendental gualities.  All glories to Nityananda Prabhu, the life of the Vaishnavas.  All glories to Advaita Acarya who has descended to deliver suffering humanity.  All glories to Shri Jahnava and Viracandra.
 
          I shall now discuss Shri Acarya Thakura's visit to Shri Khanda.  Leaving the carts on the outskirts of the temple boundry, Acarya Thakura entered the temple and bowed before the Deity of Lord Gauranga.  At that time Shri Raghunandanahappened to come to the temple and welcomed Shrinivasa with a warm embrace.  They took their seats and Raghunandanainquired about the theft of the books, as he had heard some news of the incident.  Acarya described the details of their journey and the recovery of the books.  Raghunandana then informed Shrinivasa that Narahari Sarkara Thakura had recently departed from this world.  Shrinivasa cried, lamenting, "Formerly it was Sarkara Thakura who advised me to go to Vrndavana.  But now that I have returned I am unable to meet him.  O how unfortunate I am."  Both Shrinivasa andRaghunandana wept, feeling separation from Sarkara Thakura. That evening they spent the night talking about Krishna.  In the morning they sat together in the Nathmandira continuing discussions until Acarya bid farewell and returned to Yajigrama and bowed at the feet of his mother. 
 
          Ramacandra, who had been waiting to meet Shrinivasa Acarya, came to his place and found Acarya sitting alone. He offered his obeisances, but was unable to utter a word. Ramacandra placed five coins before the feet of Acarya and bowed again.  When Shrinivasa asked his name, he replied, "I am Ramacandra from a Vaidya family of Teliavudhari."  AcaryaThakura offered him a seat and requested him to stay there. After some time Shrinivasa asked, "How far is your village from Khetari?"  Ramacandra replied that it is about four miles away."  Acarya further inquired, "When did you leave your village", and Ramacandra replied, "Four days ago I left home and on the fifth day I had your darshan."
 
          One day Acarya ordered Vyasacarya to discuss with Ramacandra about Vyakarana and literature in verses.  Thakuralistened patiently to their discussion for a long time.  In this debate Ramacandra proved himself to be a great scholar. Shri Acarya was impressed by Ramacandra's genius, although he knew that Ramacandra was proud of his knowledge.  Acarya embraced him, and personally began a debate with Ramacandra which went on for a long time, without either of them taking prasad.  Acarya was charmed by Ramacandra and considered him blessed by the goddess Sarasvati.  From that day Shri Acarya understood that Ramacandra was a jewel amongst devotees.
          On another occassion, Shri Acarya again invited Ramacandra to debate with him, which made Ramacandra feel very proud.  They continued to speak for considerable time. Thakura told Ramacandra, "If one is intelligent he must inquire as to which scriptures are capable of actually destroying the miseries of human life.  When he comes to understand this he must leave aside the reading of any other scriptures except those which can deliver the highest benefit.  It is true that all scriptures have literal and educational value, but what is the use of wasting valuable time in studying Tarka Nyaya Sastras?  What benefit will be derived from such reading?  The Bhagavata should be studied first.  It is a mine of transcendental gems and the essence of all knowledge.  Personally I prefer to read the Bhagavata. Why should I waste time reading dry, tasteless books?"
 
          Ramacandra replied enthusiastically, "I have come to you for this reason.  Please be my teacher, for I have read immumerable books but I have not been able to free myself from doubt.  O Acarya Tahkura, please

Ramacandra replied enthusiastically, "I have come to you for this reason.  Please be my teacher, for I have read immumerable books but I have not been able to free myself from doubt.  O Acarya Tahkura, please be my guide and give me shelter at your feet."  Saying this Ramacandra fell at the feet of Acarya crying.  Thakura blessed him, placing his foot on Ramacandra's head.  Ramacandra bathed the feet of Srinivasa and happily drank the water.  Srinivasa then chanted the holy name in the ear of Ramacandra.  He then began teaching Ramacandra from all the devotional books written by Rupa and Sanatana.  Within one month Ramacadra studied all these books.  Sri Acarya remarked, "He who possess such an abundance of good qualities must have accumulated such wealth through his past activities.  A proper guru can understand how to utilise such qualities in the service of the Lord."  This is the story of an illusturious guru and his illusturious disciple. 

 

          One day while Ramacandra was standing nearby Sri Acarya, a letter came from the house of Ramacandra with the news that Govinda Kaviraja was ill.  Govinda was the younger brother of Ramacandra, and he had written, "I am ill, please come soon. After two or three days you can return."  Ramacandra paid no heed to the leeter and remained with his guru engaged in study.  One and a half months passed and again a letter came saying that Govinda was on the verge of death.  Govinda explained that his hands and legs had become puffy and swollen.  Govinda requested his elder brother to please bring Acarya Thakura along with him, but Ramacandra did not tell Srinivasa.

 

          Govinda was a worshiper of Mahamaya (goddess Durga). When Govinda was praying to goddess Durga to save his life he heard an oracle say, "O my son, chant the name of Govinda. He is the only saviour and Lord of the three worlds.  I have no power to save you from the hands of death.  I also worship the lotus feet of Govinda.  He was unlimited maidservants like me.  He is the Supreme Brahman and no one in the three worlds can understand His unlimited power.  The Radha Krsna mantra is the only means for deliverance from the cycle of repeated birth and death."

 

          Hearing these words Govinda became extremely nervous. He called for his guru and requested him to do something, but the guru sat with his head down and said nothing.  Govinda then sent for his son, Dvija Simha, and asked him to send five men to bring Acarya Thakura.  He wrote a letter to Ramacandra and sent the men with it.  After a long journey they reached Yajigrama and asked the villagers for directions to Sri Acarya's house.  At his residence they sent one man into the house to inform Ramacandra of their arrival. Ramacandra came out and heard the plea of the men.  He then went to Srinivasa and requested, "Please be king upon my family."  Sri Acarya agreed to visit Govinda and they started out on that very day.  They halted in a village for the night and continued on the following morning.  Some of the men rushed ahead to inform the members of Govinda's family.

 

          Govinda Kaviraja ordered his son to plant banana trees in the village and to decorate everywhere with mango leaves. When Divja Simha came forward to greet the illustrious guests, Sri Acarya inquired who the boy was.  Ramacandra explained, "He is the son of Govinda and the servant of your feet." 

 

          Upon reaching the house Srinivasa asked Ramacandra, "What would you like me to do?" To which Ramcandra answered, "How can I give any suggestion to you.  You do as you wish." "Well", said Srinivasa, "the members of your family are also my servants."  Saying this he entered the room.  Some men helped Govinda to sit up.  Govinda managed to fold his hands in respect, but he was to weak to speak.  Sri Acarya mercifully placed his foot on Govinda's feet.  The relatives of Ramacandra then offered a seat to Srinivasa, bathed his feet with scented oil, adorned his body with sandalwood paste, and offered him some cooked food and sweets. Srinivasa ate and then ordered Govinda to eat the remnants of his food.  Govinda was helped to eat the food and at once he felt relief from his suffering.  Govinda was delighted to find that all signs of illness had left his body.

 

          The next morning Acarya smiling told Ramacandra, "Bathe Govinda with your own hands.  After that I shall purify him." Ramacandra did as requested and dressed his younger brother in clean dry clothes.  Meanwhile Srinivasa also took bath. Thereafter, Ramacandra sat with his brother as Srinivasa poured the nectar of the Hare Krsna mantra into the ears of Govinda, while the Vaisnavas sang in sankirtana joyfully.  First he chanted the Krsna mantra and after the Radha Krsna mantra and taught Govinda how to chant the mantras correctly. Govinda bowed at the feet of his preceptor, who lovingly placed his foot on Govinda's head.  Govinda now felt as strong as a lion, and happily offered many gifts to his guru. From that day forward Govinda was completely cured of his disease and a fully devoted Vaisnava.  Filled with appreciation Govinda said, "Now I can understand that your feet are my only resort.  PLease give your blessings so that I may be empowered to describe the transcendental pastimes of Krsna.  I would also like to describe the all-auspicous lila of Sri Gauranga."  Srinivasa blessed his disciple saying, "Describe Krsna lila to your hearts content.  But first study Bhaktirasamrta Sindu, Ujjalanilamani, and Vasudeva Ghosa's describtion of Sri Gauranga."

 

          Govinda eagerly followed these instructions and soon realised that without the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu the pastimes of Krsna will remain a mystery.  When Sri Acarya saw that Govinda had grasped the true essence of the scriptures, he happily embraced Govinda.  In this way Govindadasa continuously worshiped and meditated on Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu for thrity-six years.  Then, with great pleasure, Govinda Kaviraja described the Gauralila, as well as Krsnalila.  Such episodes would normally be impossible for an ignorant person like myself to describe, but by the mercy of my two masters, Sri Jahnava and Viracandra, I have been empowered to write.  Now, listen attentively as I continue this narration.

 

          Sri Thakura Mahasaya was very excited when he heard that Sri Acarya had visited the house of Govinda.  At that time Narottama became inspired to hold a huge festival in Kheturi and inagurate the worship of the Deity forms of Gaura Nitai. Thus, with the help of his his relatives, disciples, and also the inhabitants of the village, he organized the building of a temple building.  By the mercy of his guru, and through the purity of Narottama's sadhana, all arranged went very smoothly and systematically. 

 

          During this time Narottama received news that Srinivasa Acarya was in Budhari and would soon arrive in Kheturi. Overcome with joy, Narottama burst forth with fresh enthusiasm and vigor, preparing everything for Acarya's arrival.  He warned every that they must treat Srinivasa Acarya with the utmost respect.  Narottama then sent Ramacandra Kaviraja and Vyasa to greet Srinivasa.  They had not traveled far before they saw Sri Acarya, and at once fell to the ground bwoing at his feet.  Acarya embraced them both and asked about their well being.  They happily proceeded to the residence of Narottama.  When Thakura Mahasaya spotted Srinivasa Acarya approaching with Ramacandra on his left and Vyasa on his right, he cheerfully stretched out his arms and ran towards Srinivasa.  Narottama offered his obeisances and Sri Acarya embraced him warmly.  At that moment Govinda Kaviraja arrived and fell on the ground at the feet of Narottama.  Thakura Mahasya who inquired about the young man was and Sri Acarya explained that he was Govinda Kaviraja, the younger brother of Ramacandra Kaviraja.  All of them were very happy to meet each other.

 

          On  Ramacandra's request, Sri Acarya took his bath, accepted prasad, then sat down and began speaking about Krsna.  Sri Acarya and Thakura Mahasaya also reminisced about their lives in Vrndavana, the stealing of the books, and many other topics.  Everyone present listened attentively and were happy hearing this nectarean discussion.  In this way the night passed swiftly. 

 

          The following morning Srinivasa Acarya ordered Thakura Mahasaya to return to Khetari to complete the preparations for the fesitval, assuring him that he would also go to Kheturi within five days to inspect everything.  He advised Thakura Mahasya to take Vyasa along with him, as he would be a good assistant.  Srinivasa then went to his own village and Thakura Mahasya and Vyasa left for Khetari. 

 

          In Khetari, preparations for the forthcoming festival were in full swing.  Narottama sent persons out to gather all the necesary material, such as stone for carving the deity of Gauranga.  Architects were hired to build new house and rooms for the festivities.

 

          Within a few days Sri Acarya arrived in Kheturi, along with Ramacandra.  Thakura Mahasaya and Vyasa greeted them and brought them into the house.  I am unable to describe how attentively and lovingly Srinivasa was cared for in Narottama's residence.

 

          Narottama sent out invitations to all the Mahantas, Adhikaris and Vaisnavas requesting them to attend the festival which would be held on the day of the full moon in the month of Phalguna.  Thus millions of devotees assembled at Kheturi and sankirtana began led by  Narottama dasa .  At an auspicous time the Deity of Lord Gauranga was installed by Srinivasa Acarya, while all the devotees cheered joyfully, chanting the name of Hari.  Thereafter the Deity of Ballavi Kanta was installed. 

 

          Everyone present was ecstatic.  Seeing the Deities and having the opporotunity to associate with all the Vaisnavas was a most precious occassion for them all.  Some of the guests found places to stay in the village, while some lived on the outskirts of the village, and still others stayed in the new houses.  Huge quantities of curd, flat rice, bananas, sweets and sugar had been gathered and more than one hundred pots of pancamrta had been collected for the occasion. 

          Acarya himself performed the ceremony of the abhiseka of the Deities, exactly according to the rules of the sastras. All the Mahantas touched the bodies of the Deities and placed sandalwood paste and garlands on Them.  When ecstatic sankirtana began before the Deities, everyone, including family men and people of lower classes converged there to joing in singing and dancing.  Devidasa Mahasaya was the first kirtana leader, and Gauranga Ballava Raya played the mrdanga.  The Deity of Gauranga ahd been placed by the left side of the Deity of Ballava Kanta, and this was the subject matter of the kirtana of Devidasa.  All the Mahantas, Adhikaris and Vaisnavas became mad with ecstacy hearing the beautiful kirtan recitals of Devidasa. Sri Acarya was overwhelmed with emotion, as was Vyasa Acarya and Ramacandra Kaviraja.  Thakura Mahasaya danced madly, until he became almost mad with ecstacy.  Unable to continue dancing, he rolled on the floor in ecstacy.  All the spectators were spell bound, unable to imagine what kind of devotional love Thakura Mahasya possessed.  He began to laugh loudly, and his body trembled so violently that one man tried to hold him down.  Narottama's lips quivered so rapidly that they feared his teeth would fall out.  Sometimes he would fall on the ground resting his hands on his chest.  His whole body seemed to stretch and sometimes it would shrivel up as if it had been pierced by thorns.  His bodily condition was the result of his exalted spiritual emotions, which also effected others simply by watching.  Krsnananda Majumdar and his followers fell on the ground crying due to the condition of Thakura. They all began to cry loudly looking at the face of Narottama.  Holding the feet of Narotama, they cried, thanking him for granting them ecstatic devotional love. Krsnananda tearfully said, "My house has become blessed, it has become non-different from Vrndavana.  My servants and I shall remain your servants from now on."  Many people began to spontaneously give in charity, without realising how much they were giving.  But Thakura Mahasaya was not concerned about donations, he continued to stand unmoving on the dias, just like Lord Gauranga.  Anyone who witnessed his beauty fell on the ground crying. 

 

          Srinivasa Acarya embraced Narottama with great affection.  Observing the grand festival, he thought that only the Supreme Lord Himself could arrange for such a wonderful festival.  Praising Narottama he said, "Lord Gauranga will always be with you.  He has taken full charge of your life and death."

 

          After the kirtana they all ate sumptuous prasad and returned to their houses to rest.

 

          The last day of the festival they everyone assembled again, and Gokul dasa, a disciple of Thakura Mahasaya, took the initiative of leading the kirtana that day.  He began singing with the accompaniment of the mrdanga and his voice delighted the hearts of all.  Everyone stopped their conversations and joined in singing.  Gokuldasa first sang the glories of Lord Gauranga and then began singing about the pastimes of Krsna.  Hearing this, Narottama was greatly moved.  With tears streaming down his face soaking his chest, he cried out, "O what a wonderful son you are singing, Gokul."  Holding the hand of the singer he said, "O what a song, how divine is the beauty of Krsna and how pure is the love of Radha."  In this way his ecstatic emotions grew and he danced blissfully for six hours. throwing himself on the ground again and again.  No one was able to hold him.  He cried continuously calling out the name of Radha and his body trembled.  Seeing his emotional state everyone became frightened.  Sri Acarya, also fearing Narottama's life, took his hand and sat on the ground and recited slokas into Narottama's ear from Ujjala Nilamani composed by Sri Rupa. But his efforts were in vain, Narottama's condition did not change.  Srinivasa carried the unconscious Narottama into the room and lay him on the bed.  Evetually Narottama regained his external consciousness and spent the rest of the night discussing the pastimes of the Lord.

 

          The next day the devotees all bid farewell to one another.  After their departure, Narottama felt great sadness due to separation from the devotees.  To pacify him, Sri Acarya sat with Narottama, and called Rmacandra, Sri Vyasa, and others to discuss the pastimes of Krsna.  Srinivasa told Ramacandra to speak and thus he described Krsna lifa for more than one and a hlaf hours.  He then requested Narottama to say something about Krsna, and Thakura gladly described the pastimes of the Lord, while everyone listened intently. Everyone became fully abosrbed in Krsna katha as Thakura's inspiration and ecstacy increased.  In this way they entire night sped by absorbed in divine happiness. 

 

          Srinivasa Acarya remained there for one month.  Until one day he told Thakura Mahasaya that he desired to go to Yajigrama and Visnupur.  He assured Narottama that he would return soon after spending some days with the king of Visnupura.  Mahasaya cried in despair and for two to four days he did not talk to anyone.  Srinivasa ordered Ramacandra to remain staye with Narottama to keep him company.  He advised Ramacandra to spend his days with Narottama discussing the transcendental pastimes of the Lord. Ramacandra submissevely complied saying, "From now on we will always remain together.  On the day of Acarya's departure Narottama became very emtoional, he gave two mohurs and two sheets pieces of loin cloth to them, and gave Vyasacarya five coins and a loin cloth. I cannot describe the hearbreaking scene which took place at the time of the Acarya's departure.

 

          Ramacandra Kaviraja and Thakura Mahsaya spent their days happily together, discussing Krsna's pastimes, not caring for the passing of days and nights.  They went to the river Padmavati to take their baths together, and would play in the water while discussing the Krsna lila.

 

          One day while they were bathing as usual, two brahmanas named Harirama and Ramakrsna came to the river.  They happily watched Narottama and Ramacandra as they played in the water, then they too entered the water to take bath.  While bathing, the brahmanas discussed complicated spiritual topics.  Though Narottama and Ramacandra were both great scholars, they listened quietly as the brahmanas discussed.  However, after listening for some time they could no longer remain silent and began contradicting the statements of the bramanas regarding the Bhagavata and Puranas.  The brahmans were furious, but checked their anger and tried to defent their position by reciting various slokas.  After taking bath Narottama and Ramacandra returned to their houses and the brahmanas accompanied them.  They were offered food and seats with the utmost respect.  In the evening they all watched the arati ceremony before the Deities with great delight.  That night the brahmanas had a debate with Narottama and Ramacandra and were hopelessly defeated.  When the brahmanas went to bed they discussed together in hushed tones and decided that Narottama and Ramacandra must be great scholars. They also came to the conclusion that what they had learned for so long from their teachers was all in vain.  They appreciated Narottama and Ramacandra's firm conviction in service to God and the sadhus.  They were also impressed with the concept that all living entities are eligible to worship Krsna, even if he is a sudra.  While discussing these points the brahmanas fell asleep.  A Maharaja appeared to them in a drama and told them, "O brahmanas, you are fools.  Brahmanism can only be attained by worshipping Krsna.   You are very proud of your brahmanism but these two devotees are gurus of your guru.  In the morning without hesitation, go and take refuge of the feet of these two exalted devotees.  From now on simply worship the Supreme Lord Krsna, all that you have learned previously was wrong.  These two devotees have worshiped Krsna birth after birth.  Krsna is their guru, and they are His disciples life after life." 

 

          In the morning they fell at the feet of Narottama and Ramacandra.  Holding their hands the brahmans begged, "We are most unfortuante for we have taken our birth as non-brahmanas.  Please be kind and grant us the right of becoming true brahmanas.  We are sinful rascals, suffering the miseries of material life.  We have wasted our lives running after false teaching-not understanding that the lotus feet of Krsna are the ultimate goal of life.  Please help us to attain those feet at the end of our lives.  No one but you can save us from hellish existence.  Please place your feet on our heads."  Ramakrsna lamented, "O Prabhus, allow us to worship your feet life after life."  Crying out the names of Narottama and Ramacandra, they threw themselves on the ground.

 

          Narottama and Ramacandra were extremely moved by their sincere plea, and mercifully recited the holy name in the ears of Harirama and Ramakrsna.  Crying the two asked, "O lords, what should we do with our lives?"  They replied, "Chant the holy name constantly, even while eating and sleeping."  Narottama and Ramacandra came out into the compound and began chanting the name of Gauranga.  Observing their devotional mood, Ramakrsna and Harirama were also moved by ecstatic love and entered into the kirtana with great humility.  After a long time, the two Prabhus ordered them to take their baths in the Ganges and then recited Radha Krsna nama in their ears.  The two disciples fell prostrate on the ground at the feet of their gurus.  Narottama and Ramacandra placed their feet on the heads of their disciples.  They taught their disciples the science of devotional service, and advised them to read the sastra daily. 

 

          As directed, the two brahmanas began to study the books of Sri Rupa Gosvami, and eventually thoroughly studed all the scriptures.  In this way they attained great heights of spiritual development.  Being faithful to the feet of Sri Jahnava and Viracandra, I, Nityananda dasa take pleasure in writing Prem Vilasa.

Srinivas Acharya Thakur lived in Sripat Jajigram in West Bengal with his two wives, Isvari and Srimati. One day while Srinivas was sitting for japa and meditation on Vraja lila, he entered into deep samadhi. It was not unusual for him to remain so absorbed for hours, but this time night came and went and still his samadhi did not break. Dawn flowed into midday, midday into dusk, but still Srinivas remained sitting on his asana, his mind turned inwards, unaware of the outside world. Srimati and Isvari were distressed to see their husband in this state. When another night came and he still showed no sign of consciousness, Srimati and Isvari called for Srinivasa’s dearest disciple, Ramachandra Kaviraj. Ramachandra came and they told him, “Ram! Your Gurudev has been sitting in meditation for two days. He has not eaten anything, and his breathing is very slow. We are afraid he might die!” Ramachandra said, “O my dear mothers! I will find out what’s the matter. Don’t worry, everything will be alright.” Ramachandra sat near his Gurudeva and began to meditate. Soon he became completely immersed in Vraja Lila, and saw himself in his svarupa as “Karuna-manjari.” …”Karuna manjari” found herself in the midst of a grove of trees and flowering vines, and heard the sounds of Radharani’s sakhis laughing with Krishna. Following the sounds of their laughter, she made her way to the bank of Sri Radhakunda. There she saw two or three manjaris standing far away from Radha and Krishna and the sakhis, looking with distress towards the water of the kunda. One of them explained, “Radharani has lost her favorite nose ring during jala-keli! We must get it back. See, your sakhi is searching for it now.” Karuna-manjari saw her guru-rupa-sakhi, Mani Manjari (Srinivas Acharya Thakur) diving again and again into the waters of Radhakunda in search of the missing nose ring. Karuna-manjari dove into the water and joined in the search. Within half an hour, she found Radharani’s nose ring and gave it to Mani Manjari. Mani Manjari was overjoyed to find the nosering at last. She gave the nosering to Rupa Manjari, who placed it in the nose of Radharani.
