Mother Govinda is a very dear servant of Srila Prabhupada and took care of Srila Prabhupada a lot in the early days of ISKCON and she has stated
Srila Prabhupada never took grains on Janmastami:
Govinda Dasi This is very informative. Yes, it is true that Srila Prabhupada would not even take a drink of water on Janmastami, of Gour Purnima, and I would sometimes worry about him as he seemed very weak and had to rest. But he neither ate nor drank anything. So we followed suit. We also did not take water or food until midnight, and then only Ekadashi preps. Now, I have seen in Iskcon, this valuable austerity has been mostly lost, and so it is very good that this article has been posted. Because of Srila Prabhupada's example, and his seriousness about this, I always fast totally on these two days and also encourage others to do so. We need all the punya we can get!!

Govinda Dasi Janmastami is nearly here; this article written by Payonidhi das is both informative as well as sorely needed. Yes, it is true, Srila Prabhupada did not eat or even drink a drop of water on Janmastami and Goura Purnima. And the fast break at midnight was Ekadasi, also at moon rise it was Ekadasi fast. We early devotees also fasted and many of us still do so. This article underlines the sastric importance of this.
