Chapter 3 of the Narasimha book Narasimha Kavachas and 2 Narasimha Upanisads., explanation of the Narasimha Maha mantra

 
There is 2 known Kavachas of Lord Narasimha, This Narasimha Kavaca is from one of the chapters of the Brahma Samhita, in general devotees are familiar with the prayers from the Brahma Samhita Chapter that was rediscovered by Lord Caitanya , starting with Isvara paramah Krsna.
This Narsimha kavacha was given by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada to sannyasis that went to preach in the west . This Kavacha also focuses on the Narasimha Mahamantra that is descriped in 2 of the Upanisads related to Lord Narasimha:
There are two Upanisads that deal with the Narasimha mantra. The Narasimha  mantra was the main mantra in some other Kali yuga, but in this Kali yuga Lord  Caitanya has given us the Hare Krsna Maha-mantra
 
The Narasimha Mahamantra is:
om Hrim Ksraum ugram viram maha-vishnum jvalantam sarvato  mukham nrisimham bhishanam bhadram mrityur mrityum namamy  aham
"I bow down to Lord Narasimha who is ferocious  and heroic like Lord Vishnu. He is burning from every side. He is terrific,  auspicious and the death of death personified."
The Narasimha Tapani Upanisad that I once read in  Los Angeles was a copy the Bhaktivedanta Achieves had.  . In that  Upanisad, the Lord Brahma of that universe was chanting this Narasimha mantra  and attained perfection.  
  And the there is  the  Narasimha Purva Tapaniyopanisad.

May Indra, the ancient  and famous, Pushan the all-knowing and swift, Vayu, who saves us from all harm,  and Brihaspati who protects spiritual wealth—all kindly bestow upon us their  blessings [for the intellectual strength to understand the scriptures and to  follow the teachings]. Oh Supreme Personality of Godhead, may peace prevail over  the three types of disturbances; adhiatmika, adidaivika, andadhibautika.”

The (unmanifest)  universe was immersed in water. There, Prajapati (Brahma) was born upon a  lotus-leaf. In his mind a desire arose: “I will create the universe.” Therefore,  whatever a man desires in his mind, he then tells in speech and attains it by  performing activity.
(RV.10.129.4)
He (Brahma) performed  austerities, and after that austerity he saw the mantra-raja (the king of  mantras) which glorifies Lord Narasimha and is composed in the anushtubh metre.  And using this, he began creating whatever exists. Therefore, it is said that  whatever exists in the whole universe is anushtubh; from the anushtubh are born  all creatures; having been born, they live because of the anushtubh; dying they  go back to the anushtubh. The anushtubh is the first, and the anushtubh is the  last, for the anushtubh is speech. Creatures depart by speech, and they are born  by speech. Therefore it is said that the anushtubh is the highest of all  metres.
sasagaram sa-parvatam  sapta-dvipam vasundharam tat-samnah prathamam padam janiyat  yaksha-gandharvapsaro-ganasevitam-antariksham tat-samno dvitiyam padam  janiyad-vasu-rudradityaih sarvair-daivaih sevitam divam tat-samnas-tritiyam  padam janiyat brahma-svarupam niranjanam paramam vyomakam tat-samnash-caturtham  padam janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati rig-yajuh-samatharvanash-catvaro  vedah sangah sashakhash-catvarah pada bhavanti kim dhyanam kim daivatam  kanyangani kani daivatani kim candah ka rishiyariti // 2  //
One should know that  the first line (of the mantra-raja) is the earth with its oceans, mountains and  seven islands. The second line is the antariksha (space between earth and  heaven) populated by the multitudes of Yakshas, Gandarvas and Apsaras. The third  line is the heavenly planets where the Vasus, Rudras, Adityas and all other  demigods reside. The fourth line is the transcendental form of the Absolute  Truth dwelling in the highest abode. He who knows this attains immortality. The  four lines (of this mantra) are the four Vedas, Rg, Yajur, Sama and Atharva,  with their angas and shakhas (divisions and brances). Thus (one should inquire)  what is the meditation (of this mantra)? What is it’s Deity? What are its parts?  Who are their Deities? What is the metre? Who composed it? 
sa hovaca prajapatih  -
sa yo ha vai  savitrisyashtaksharam padam shriyabhishiktam tat-samno’ngam veda shriya  haivabhishicyate sarve vedah pranavadikastam pravanam tat-samno’ngam veda sa trimllokanjayati catur-vimshatyakshara  maha-lakshmir-yajus-tat-samno’ngam veda sa ayur-yashah kirti-jnan-aishvarya  vanbhavati tasmad-idam sangam sama janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati  savitrim pranavam yajur-lakshmim shtri-shudraya neccanti dva-trimshad-aksharam  sama janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati savitrim lakshmim yajuh pranavam  yadi janiyat stri shudrah sa mrito’dho gaccati tasmat-sarvada nacashte  yadyacashte sa acaryaste naiva sa mrito’dho gaccati // 3  //
Lord Brahma said  –
One who knows that  wonderful mantra consisting of eight syllables and the savitri mantra (as an  anga) is blessed with all wealth. All the Vedas have the pranava (om) at the  beginning; if one also knows this pranava as an anga of that mantra, he conquers  the three worlds. There is a mantra of Goddess Mahalakshmi whic consists of  twenty-four syllables – if one knows this as one of the anga-mantras (of the  mantra-raja), one will be blessed with longevity, fame, honour, knowledge and  power. Therefore one should know this mantra along with its angas; he who knows  it attains immortality. The acaryas do not give the savitri mantra, the pranava  or the lakshmi mantra to women and shudras. One should know well this thirty-two  syllable mantra, and he who knows it attains immortality. However, if a woman or  a shudra knows the savitri mantra, pranava or lakshmi mantra they go downwards  after death. Therefore one should never initiate them into this. If one does so,  the teacher will also fall down after death.
sa hovaca prajapatih  –
agnirvaideva idam  sarvam vishva bhutani prana va indriyani pashavo’nnambhritam samrat svaranvirat  tat-samnah prathamam padam janiyat rig-yajuh-samatharva-rupah suryo’ntaraditye  hiranmayah purushastat-samno dvitiyam padam janiyat ya aushadhinam  prabhur-bhavati
taradhipatih somastat  –samnas-tritiyam padam janiyat sa brahma sa shivah sa harih sendrah so’ksharah  paramah svarat tat-samnash-caturtham padam janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca  gaccati ugram prathamasyadyo jvalam dvitiyasyadyam nrisimham tritiyasyadyam  mrityum caturthasyadyam sama janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati  tasmad-idam sama yatra kutra-cinnacashte yadi datubhapekshate putraya  shushrushave dasyatyanyasmai shishyaya va ceti // 4 //
Lord Brahma said  –
One should know that  the first line of this mantra is Agni, the Vedas, this universe and all living  entities, the five life-airs, the sense organs, animals, food, and the eternal  Supreme Lord, who is independent and omniscient.
One should know that  the second line of the mantra is the sun in the form of the Rg, Yajur, Sama and  Atharva Veda‚ and the Supreme Lord who resides within the  sun-orb.
One should know that  the third line is the Lord that rules over all plants and herbs, the Lord of all  luminaries, and the moon.
One should know the  fourth line to be Brahma, Siva, Hari, Indra, Agni – the eternal Supreme  Lord.
He who knows this  attains immortality.
One should know that  ugram is the first word of this mantra, jvalan is the second, nrisimham is the  third, mrityum is the fourth. He who knows this attains  immortality.
One should not give  this mantra capriciously; if one wishes to impart it, one should only impart it  to one’s son if he desires to learn it, or otherwise to a  disciple.
sa hovaca prajapatih  –
kshirodarnava-shayinam  nrikesari-vigraham yogi-dhyeyam param padam sama janiyadyojaniteso’mritatvam ca  gaccati viram prathamasyadyardhantyam tam sa dvitiyasyadyardhantyam hambhi  tritiyasyadyardhantyam mrityum caturthasyadyardhantyam samam tu janiyadyo janite  so’mritatvam ca gaccati tasmad idam sama yena kena-cid-acarya-mukhena yo janite  sa taineva sharirena samsaran-mucyate mocyati mumukshur-bhavati japatenaiva  sharirena devata-darshanam karoti tasmad-idam eva mukhya-dvaram kalau nanyesham  bhavati tasmad-idamsangam sama  janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati // 5 //
Lord Brahma said  -
One should know this  mantra as the form of the man-lion (Nrisimha) who rests in the milk-ocean in the  spiritual world, who is meditated upon by the yogis. One who knows this attains  immortality.
One should know the  word viram as the last part of the first-half of the first line. Tam sa –as that  of the second; ham bhi - as that of the third; mrityum - as that of the fourth.  One who knows this attains immortality.
Therefore one who  learns this mantra from the mouth of his spiritual master is liberated from the  cycle of birth and death; he helps to liberate and attains liberation; he who  chants it sees the Lord while still residing in this body. This is therefore  considered to be the gate of liberation in the age of Kali, and there is no  other way to attain liberation. Therefore one should know this mantra with all  its divisions. He who knows this attains liberation.
ritagm satyam param  brahma purusham krishna-pingalam / urdhva-retam virupaksham shamkaram  nila-lohitam // uma-patih pashu-patih pinaki hyamita-dyutih / ishanah  sarva-vidya-namirashvarah sarva-bhutanam brahmadhipatir-brahmano’dhipatiryo vai  yajur-veda-vacyastam sama janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati  maha-prathamantar-dhasyadyantavato dvitiyantar-dasyadyam shanam  tritiyantar-dhasyadyam nama caturthantar-dhasyadyam sama janite so’mritatvam ca  gaccati tasmad idam sama sac-cid-ananda-mayam param brahma tamevam vidvan-amrita  iha bhavati tasmad idam sangam sama janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati //  6 //
One should know this  mantra as being non-different from the Supreme Absolute Truth; the Supreme  Person who is of a dark hue; the dark and red form of Sankara, the husband of  Uma, the lord of animals, the wielder of the bow, who is of infinite splendor,  the master of knowledge, the lord of all beings, the lord of Brahma and the  brahmanas, the one who is to be praised by the Yajur Veda. One who knows this  attains immortality.
One should know that  the word maha is the main word of the last half of the first line; rvato – as  that of the second;shanam - as that of  the third, nama- as the fourth. One who knows this attains  immortality.
Therefore this mantra  is the Supreme Brahman, who is full of bliss, knowledge and eternity; he who  knows this becomes immortal. Therefore one should know the mantra along with its  divisions. And one who knows this attains immortality.
vishva-srija etena vai  vishvam idam srijanta yad vishvam srijanta tasmad vishva srijo vishvam enananu  prajayate brahmana salokatam sarshtitam sayujyam yanti tasmad idam sangam sama  janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati vishnum prathamantyam mukham  dvitiyantyam bhadram tritiyantam myaham caturthantyam sama janiyadyo janite  so’mritatvam ca gaccati yo’sauveda yad  idam kimcatmani brahmanye-vanushtubham janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati  stri pumsayorva ihaiva sthatumapekshatetasmai sarvaishvaryam dadati yatra kutrapi mriyate dehante devah paramam  brahma tarakam vyacashte yenasavamriti-bhutva so’mritatvam ca gaccati tasmad  idam sama madhyagm japati tasmad idam samangam prajapatis tasmad idamsamangam prajapatirya evam vedeti  mahopanishat / ya etam mahopanishadam veda sa krita purashcarano maha-vishnur  bhavati maha-vishnur bhavati // iti prathamopanishat // 7 // 
With this (mantra)  those entities who create created the universe created. Since they created  everything, they are known as ? Everything originates from them and they finally  achieve the same world, wealth, and remain close to the Absolute Truth. One who  knows this attains immortality.
One should know the  word vishnum as the final part of the first line, mukham as the second, bhadram  as the third, and myaham as the fourth. And one who knows this attains  immortality.
The Lord has manifest  all this. It relates to the soul and to the Absolute Truth. One should know how  to worship with the anushtubh metre. One who knows this attains  immortality.
And if a man or woman  desires to stay on the earth, the (mantra-raja) gives him wealth and power over  all things. Wherever one may die, the Supreme Lord blesses that person and  delivers him to the highest abode, where he attains immortality. Therefore one  should chant this mantra. One who chants this and knows it well, becomes a part  of it, and becomes like Prajapati.
Thus reads the great  upanishad. One who knows this great upanishad and performs the proper worship,  attains Mahavishnu. He attains Mahavishnu.
Second  Upanishad
deva ha vai mrityoh  papmabhyah samsaracca bibhiyuste prajapatimupadhavam stebhya etam mantra-rajam  narasimham-anushtubham prayaccattena vai ha mritum-jayan papmanam  cataran-samsaram catarams-tasmadyo mrityoh papmabhyah samsaracca bibhiyatsa etam  mantra-rajam narasimham-anushtubham prati-grihnatiyatsa mrityum tarati sa  papmanam tarati sa samsaram tarati tasya ha vai pranavasya ya purva matra  prithivya karah sa rigbhir-rig vedo brahma vasavo gayatri garhapatya sa samnah  prathamah pado bhavati dvitiyantariksham sa ukarah sa yajur-bhir yajur vedo  vishnu rudras-trishtuvdakshanagnih sa samno dvitiyah pado bhavati tritiya dyauh  sa makarah sa samabhih sama vedo rudra aditya jagatya-havaniyah sa  samnas-tritiyah pado bhavati yavasane’sya caturthyardhamatra sa somaloka  aumkarah so’tharvanair mantrairthava vedah samvartako’gnir maruto virade karsher  bhasvati smrita sa samnash-caturthah pado bhavati // 1 //
The demigods were  afraid of death, sin and the cycle of birth and death. They took refuge in  Prajapati and he gave them this mantra-raja which invokes Narasimha and is  composed in the anushtubh metre. With this they conquered death, overcome sin,  and avoided the cycle of birth and death. Therefore one who fears death, sin and  samsara should take this mantra-raja which is addressed to Lord Narasimha and  composed in the anushtubh metre. He will then conquer death, sin and  samsara.
Of the pranava, the  first syllable is ‘a’. It is the Rg Veda, it is Brahman, the Vasus, the gayatri  metre and the garhapatya fire – this is the first line.
The second syllable is  ‘u’ and it is the Yajur Veda, it is Vishnu, the Rudras, the trishtubh metre and  dakshina fire – this is the second line.
The third syllable is  ‘m’ and that is the Sama Veda, it is Rudra, the Adityas, the jagati metre and  the ahavaniyafire – this is the third  line.
The fourth  half-syllable which is at the end is the world of Soma, the om sound. It  consists of the hymns of the Atharva Veda, the Atharva Veda itself, it is the  fire of universal destruction, the Maruts, the Viraj, the highest wisdom and the  greatest effulgence – this is the fourth line.
ashtaksharah prathamah  pado bhavatyashtaksharasrayah pada bhavantyeva dvatrimshadaksharani sampadyante  dvatrimshadakshara va anushtub-bhavatyanushtubha sarvamidam srishtamanushtubha  sarvamupasamhritam tasya haitasyapancangani bhavanti catvarah padashcatvaryanganibhavanti sa-pranavam sarvam pancamam  bhavatihridayaya namah shirase svaha  shikhaya vashat kavacaya hum astraya phadati prathamam prathamena samyujyate  dvitiyam dvitiyena tritiyam tritiyena caturtham caturthena pancamam pancamena  vyatipajati vyatishikta va ime lokas-tasmadyatishiktanyangani bhavanti  aum-ityetad-aksharam-idam sarvam tasmat-pratyaksharamubhayata aum-karo bhavati  aksharanam nyasamupadishanti brahmavadinah // 2 //
The first line is of  eight syllables, and the three remaining lines are also of eight syllables; thus  the result is thirty-two syllables. The anushtubha metre is therefore of  thirty-two syllables; by the anushtubha metre the whole world was created, and  by the anushtubha metre it is wound-up again.
(The mantra) has five  angas (parts) – the four lines correspond to these four angas and the pranava  corresponds with the fifth. Of the five angas, om corresponds with the heart  (namah), to the head (svaha), to the shikha (vashat), to the body (hum) and to  the missile (phat).The first is  combined with the first line (ugram viram mahavishnum - om hridayaya namah), the  second is combined with the second line (jvalantam sarvatomukham -om shirase  svaha)‚ the third with the third line (nrisimham bhishanam bhadram - om shikhaya  vashat), the fourth with the fourth line (om mrityumrityum namamyaham – om  kavacaya hum) and the fifth with the fifth (om ugram viram mahavishnum jvalantam  sarvatomukham nrisimham bhishanam bhadram mrityumrityum namamyaham – om astraya  phat).
Because all the worlds  are linked with one another, similarly the constituents (of the lines of the  mantra) are also interwoven into one another. The pranava syllable is the whole  world (Mandukya Upanishad), therefore the sound of omhas a place both before and after each  syllable (of the mantra). Thus – om u om gram om vi om ram om etc. These  syllables are to be thus drawn as teachings of those who know  Brahman.
tasya ha va ugram  prathamam sthanam janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati viram dvitiyam  sthanam mahavishnum tritiyam sthanam jvalantam caturtham sthanam sarvatomukham  pancamam sthanam nrisimham shashtam sthanam bhishanam saptamam sthanam bhadram  ashtamam sthanam mrityumrityum navamam sthanam namami dashamam  sthanam-aham-ekadasham sthanam janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati  ekadasha-pada va anushtub-bhavatyanushtubha sarvam-idam srishtamanushtubhasarvamidam-upasamhritam tasmat-sarvaushtubham  janiyadyo janite so’mritatvam ca gaccati // 3 //
In this (mantra) one  should know that ugram is first – one who knows this attains immortality. At the  second is viram, at the third mahavishnum, at the fourth jvalantam, at the fifth  sarvatomukham, at the sixthnrisimham,at the seventh  bhishanam, at the eighth bhadram, at the ninth mrityumrityum, at the tenth  namami and at the eleventh aham. One who knows this attains  immortality.
The anushtubh has  eleven words, by the anushtubh this whole world has been created and by the  anushtubh it will again be reabsorbed. Therefore one should understand this  whole world as being of the nature of anushtubh- one who knows this attains  immortality.

The Demigods said to  Prajapati (Brahma): Why is the word ‘ugram’ used?And Prajapati answered Because by His  greatness He (the Lord) lifts up all the worlds (udghrinati), all demigods, all  entities, creates continually, ekshpands and gives life, while He is caused to  be elevated and is elevated
(Rg  2.33.11)
Therefore the word ugam  is used.
Now why is the word  ‘viram’ used? Because by His power he  (this translation is not completed)
 
om Hrim Ksraum ugram viram maha-vishnum jvalantam sarvato  mukham nrisimham bhishanam bhadram mrityur mrityum namamy  aham
In Simhacalam (near Visakapatnam) in  South India  I read the commentary of Sri Ramanujacarya where he compared the 9 Aspects of Lord Narasimha to different  verses in the 11 chapter of Bhagavad Gita when Arjuna saw the Universal form, and those frightening features has been compared by Sri Ramanujacarya to Lord Narasimhadevas transcendental features:
Srila Ramanujacarya has commented on verses from the 11th Chapter of the  Bhagavad Gita, that these nine forms of Lord Narasimha, as described in this  mantra, are manifested by the Universal form when Krsna manifested that form to  Arjuna. These nine forms of Lord Narasimha are manifested within this part of  the 11th Chapter of Bhagavad Gita: 
BG 11.10-11: Arjuna saw in that universal form  unlimited mouths, unlimited eyes, unlimited wonderful visions. The form was  decorated with many celestial ornaments and bore many divine upraised weapons.  He wore celestial garlands and garments, and many divine scents were smeared  over His body. All was wondrous, brilliant, unlimited, all-expanding.  
BG 11.12: If hundreds of thousands of suns  were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence  of the Supreme Person in that universal form.  
BG 11.13: At that time Arjuna could see in  the universal form of the Lord the unlimited expansions of the universe situated  in one place although divided into many, many thousands.  
BG 11.14: Then, bewildered and astonished,  his hair standing on end, Arjuna bowed his head to offer obeisances and with  folded hands began to pray to the Supreme Lord.  
BG 11.15: Arjuna said: My dear Lord Krsna,  I see assembled in Your body all the demigods and various other living entities.  I see Brahma sitting on the lotus flower, as well as Lord Siva and all the sages  and divine serpents.  
BG 11.16: O Lord of the universe, O  universal form, I see in Your body many, many arms, bellies, mouths and eyes,  expanded everywhere, without limit. I see in You no end, no middle and no  beginning.  
BG 11.17: Your form is difficult to see  because of its glaring effulgence, spreading on all sides, like blazing fire or  the immeasurable radiance of the sun. Yet I see this glowing form everywhere,  adorned with various crowns, clubs and discs.  
BG 11.18: You are the supreme primal  objective. You are the ultimate resting place of all this universe. You are  inexhaustible, and You are the oldest. You are the maintainer of the eternal  religion, the Personality of Godhead. This is my opinion.  
BG 11.19: You are without origin, middle  or end. Your glory is unlimited. You have numberless arms, and the sun and moon  are Your eyes. I see You with blazing fire coming forth from Your mouth, burning  this entire universe by Your own radiance.  
BG 11.20: Although You are one, You spread  throughout the sky and the planets and all space between. O great one, seeing  this wondrous and terrible form, all the planetary systems are perturbed.  
BG 11.21: All the hosts of demigods are  surrendering before You and entering into You. Some of them, very much afraid,  are offering prayers with folded hands. Hosts of great sages and perfected  beings, crying "All peace!" are praying to You by singing the Vedic hymns.  
BG 11.22: All the various manifestations  of Lord Siva, the Adityas, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Visvedevas, the two  Asvis, the Maruts, the forefathers, the Gandharvas, the Yakshas, the Asuras and  the perfected demigods are beholding You in wonder.  
BG 11.23: O mighty-armed one, all the  planets with their demigods are disturbed at seeing Your great form, with its  many faces, eyes, arms, thighs, legs, and bellies and Your many terrible teeth;  and as they are disturbed, so am I.  
BG 11.24: O all-pervading Visnu, seeing  You with Your many radiant colors touching the sky, Your gaping mouths, and Your  great glowing eyes, my mind is perturbed by fear. I can no longer maintain my  steadiness or equilibrium of mind.  
BG 11.25: O Lord of lords, O refuge of the  worlds, please be gracious to me. I cannot keep my balance seeing thus Your  blazing deathlike faces and awful teeth. In all directions I am bewildered.  
BG 11.26-27: All the sons of Dhrtarastra,  along with their allied kings, and Bhisma, Drona, Karna -- and our chief  soldiers also -- are rushing into Your fearful mouths. And some I see trapped  with heads smashed between Your teeth.  
BG 11.28: As the many waves of the rivers  flow into the ocean, so do all these great warriors enter blazing into Your  mouths.  
BG 11.29: I see all people rushing full  speed into Your mouths, as moths dash to destruction in a blazing fire.  
BG 11.30: O Visnu, I see You devouring all  people from all sides with Your flaming mouths. Covering all the universe with  Your effulgence, You are manifest with terrible, scorching rays.  
BG 11.31: O Lord of lords, so fierce of  form, please tell me who You are. I offer my obeisances unto You; please be  gracious to me. You are the primal Lord. I want to know about You, for I do not  know what Your mission is.
These are the nine aspects of Ugra Narasima.

Bhisanam Narasimha: Bhisanam Narasimha is when Lord Narasimah manifests His frightening aspect (especailly to the nondevotees)
Bhadram Narasimha : Is when Lord Narasimha manifest His Auspiscious Form
Mrityur Mrityum Narasimha: Is that Lord Narasimha is death personified and the protector of death.

Sri  Narad Muni said: “My dear father and lord, master of the Universe, lord of the  multitude of demigods headed by Indra, kindly tell me the kavaca mantra of Lord  Nrsimha, the incarnation of Visnu. O master, reading this kavaca aloud, a  learned man will become victorious throughout the three worlds."

"Lord Brahma said: My dear Narada, please hear me. O best  of my sons, who are rich in austerity, I shall speak this kavaca of Lord  Narasimha, which gives victory over the three worlds."

shresthaham jagatam vatsa
pathanat dharanat yataha
"My  dear boy, by recitation of this kavaca an eloquent person will become victorious  throughout the three worlds. It is by reciting this and meditating deeply on it  that I (lord Brahma) am the creator of all these planetary systems."
4. laksmir jagat-trayam  pati
samharta cha maheshvaraha
pathanad dharanad deva
babhuvush cha  digishvaraha
"It  is by reciting and meditating upon this that Laksmi maintains the three worlds,  and Lord Siva destroys them. Also the demigods in this way became controllers of  the different directions."

"I  shall speak this essence of all Vedic mantras, which wards off all kinds of  ghosts and hobgoblins. By its grace the sage Durvasa became victorious  throughout the three worlds, commanding respect and most fearful in his  anger."

"For  this kavaca, which is directly perceived as giving victory over the three  worlds, I (Brahma) am the Rsi, Gayatri is the metre, and the all powerful  Nrsimhadev is the Deity."

"One  should place Lord Nrsimha's mantra bija, ksraum, on one's head, thinking,  'May my head be protected by the moon-colored one, who is the greatest among  humans. My obeisances unto the ferocious and powerful, the great Visnu, the  fiery one, who's faces are on all sides, the fearful one, Nrsimha, who causes  the death of even death personified, or the one who can overcome death.' One  should place this mantra, composed of thirty two syllables upon his head. It is  the king of all mantras. It is like a wish fulfilling tree for the demigods and  devotees."

"One  should also place ksraum firmly upon his neck for protection. Placing the  word bhagavate upon his heart, narasimhaya upon his two eyes, and  jvala maline on the top of his head, one meditates upon the different  parts of this narasimha mantra protecting the different parts of his  body."

"One  should place on his nose the syllables dipta damstraya agni netraya sarva rakso  ghnaya sarva bhuta vinasanaya. (Obeisances unto Him, whose teeth are blazing,  whose eyes are fire, and who destroys all ghosts and raksasas.)"

"Meditating on the protection of one's face, one should  place there the syllables ‘sarva jvara vinasaya daha daha paca paca raksa  raksa. ksraum ugram viram maha visnum jvalanatam sarvatomukham nrsimham bhisanam  bhadram mrtyu mrtyum namamy aham. ksraum bhagavate narasimhya jvalamaline dipta  damstrayagni netraya sarva rakso ghnaya sarva bhuta vinasanaya svaha’. (This  means: Unto He who vanquishes all fevers, oblations. Burn and burn, cook and  cook, protect protect. My obeisances unto the ferocious and powerful, the great  Visnu, the fiery one whose faces are on all sides, the fearful one, Nrsimha, who  causes the death of even death personified, or who can overcome even death. Unto  the Personality of Godhead Narasimha, garlanded with blazing energy, whose teeth  are glowing and whose eyes are fiery, who kills all raksasas and demons and  annihilates the ghosts, to You my oblations)"

"Meditating on the protection of one's rectum, one should  first sip water for purification and chant om Ramacandra namah. Sipping  water again one should place the bija mantra klim on both of his hands  together. Thereafter one should place om namah on his feet and  narayanaya on his side, as well as the bija mantras am hrim kraum  ksraum hum phat."

"Praying for the protection of one's waist, one should  place there the varaksara Om. One should place the syllables om namo  bhagavate upon his feet, vasudevaya on his back, and klim krsnaya  upon his two thighs."

"Upon his knees, one should place the mantra klim  krsnaya, thinking that the Lord may always protect me in His form as the  best of human beings. Then one should sip water for purification and place the  mantra klim glaum klim syamalangaya namah upon his feet."

"One  should meditate upon the constant protection of the body, placing the mantra  kshraum narasimhaya kshraum upon all his limbs."

"Lord Brahma continued: My dear boy, thus I have told you  the embodiment of the potencies of all mantras. Because of your great affection  I have explained it to you, although it is not to be spoken to just  anyone."

sarva-siddhi-yuto bhavet
"Having performed worship of the spiritual master, one  may accept this kavaca. Having become enriched in his pious activities he will  attain all perfections."

"Performing the ritualistic ceremonies of purification  (purascarya) one hundred and eight times is equal to one tenth the effect  received by that best of devotees who chants this kavaca."

"Laksmi, the Goddess of fortune, and Sarasvati, the  Goddess of speech and learning, reside in the home of that fortunate soul who  has become perfected by this kavaca, giving up the intoxication of competing  with others for supremacy."

api varsa sahasranam
pujayah phalam apnuyat
"Simply offering eight times puspajali and reading  only once the original version, one attains the result of even a thousand years  of worship."
21. bhurje vilikhya  gutikam

kanthe va dakshine bahau
narasimho bhavet svayam
"If  one write this down on a leaf or bark of a tree and keeps it within a golden  capsule on his neck or right arm, Lord Nrsimhadev will be personally  present."
22. yoshid vama-bhuje  chaiva
purusho dakshine kare
vibhryat kavacham punyam
sarva-siddhi-yuto bhavet
"A  woman may keep it on her left arm, a man on the right hand. Certainly this most  auspicious kavaca brings all perfection to the bearer."
23. kaka-vandhya cha ya  nari
mrita-vatsa cha ya bhavet
janma-vandhya nashta putra
bahu-putravati bhavet
"A  woman who is totally barren, or who bears only one child, or whose sons are lost  or dead may become possessed of many sons."
24. kavachasya  prasadena
jivan mukta bhaven-naraha
trilokyam kshobhayasyeva
trailokya vijayi bhavet
"By  the grace of this kavaca, a man becomes jivan mukta, liberated soul even  within this life time. He is able to move the whole universe, and certainly  becomes victorious throughout the three worlds."

rakshasa danavash cha ye
tam drishtva prapalayante
deshad deshantaram  dhruvam
"Certainly bhutas, pretas, pisacas, raksasas, and danavas  all immediately flee from the country and go to another upon seeing  it."
26. yasmin gehe cha  kavacham
grame va yadi tishthati
tam deshantu parityajya
prayanti chatidurantaha
"In  the home or even the same village where this kavaca exists, all such demoniac  creatures, once having understood its presence, give up that place and go far  away."
Thus  ends the Sri Nrsimha Kavaca, of the Trailokya Vijaya in the Samhita of  Brahma.
This second Kavacha is more widely known in ISKCON however the desire for material benediction is Sakama bhakta so as such pure devotees and aspiring pure devotees would never chant :

kamayate yam yam  kamam tam tam prapnoty  asamshayam
21.  Whatever one desires in this world he can attain without doubt. One can have  wealth, many sons, and a long life. 
But    they are natural blessings that comes with chanting this Kavacha ,Lord Narasimha is the Supreme wellwisher of His devotees.
Lord Caitanya has taught us to pray:
na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagad-isha kamaye mama janmani janmanishvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi
O almighty Lord, I have no desire to accumulate wealth, nor do I desire beautiful women, nor do I want any number of followers. I only want your causeless devotional service, birth after birth.
Sri  Nrisimha Kavacha of Prahlad
from the Brahmanda  Purana.

1. I  shall now recite the Narasimha-kavacha, formerly spoken by Prahlada Maharaja. It  is most pious, vanquishes all kinds of impediments, and provides one all  protection.
sarva-sampat-karam  chaiva svarga-moksha-pradaayakam
dhyaatva nrisimham  devesham hema-sinhaasana  sthitamah
2.  It bestows upon one all opulences and can give one elevation to the heavenly  planets or liberation. One should meditate on Lord Narasimha, Lord of the  universe, seated upon a golden throne.
vivritasyam  tri-nayanam sharad-indu-sama-prabham
lakshmyaalingita-vaamaangam  vibhuutibhi  rupaashritam
3.  His mouth is wide open, He has three eyes, and He is as radiant as the autumn  moon. He is embraced by Lakshmi devi on his left side, and His form is the  shelter of all opulences, both material and spiritual.
chatur-bhujam  komalaangam svarna-kundala-shobhitam
saroja-shobitoraskam ratna-keyuura-mudritam
4.  The Lord has four arms, and His limbs are very soft. He is decorated with golden  earrings. His chest is resplendent like the lotus flower, and His arms are  decorated with jewel-studded ornaments.
tapta-kaanchana-sankasham pita-nirmala-vasasam
indradi-sura-maulishthaha sphuran manikya-diptibhih
5.  He is dressed in a spotless yellow garment, which exactly resembles molten gold.  He is the original cause of existence, beyond the mundane sphere, for the great  demigods headed by Indra. He appears bedecked with rubies which are blazingly  effulgent.
virajita-pada-dvandvam shankha-chakradi-hetibhihi
garutmata cha  vinayat stuyamanam  mudanvitam
6.  His two feet are very attractive, and He is armed with various weapons such as  the conch, disc, etc. Garuda joyfully offers prayers with great  reverence.
sva-hrit-kamalasamvaasam kritvaa tu kavacham pathet
nrisimho me shirah patu
loka-rakshartha-sambhavaha
7.  Having seated Lord Narasimhadeva upon the lotus of one's heart, one should  recite the following mantra: “May Lord Nrisimha, who protects all the planetary  systems, protect my head.”
sarvago ‘pi stambha  vasaha phalam me rakshatu  dhvanim
nrisimho me drishau  paatu soma-suryagni-lochanaha
8.  Although the Lord is all-pervading, He hid Himself within a pillar. May He  protect my speech and the results of my activities. May Lord Narasimha, whose  eyes are the sun, and fire, protect my eyes.
smritam me patu  nriharih muni-vaarya-stuti-priyaha
nasam me simha-nasas  tu mukham  lakshmi-mukha-priyaha
9.  May Lord Nrihari, who is pleased by the prayers offered by the best of sages,  protect my memory. May He who has the nose of a lion protect my nose, and may He  whose face is very dear to the goddess of fortune protect my mouth.
sarva-vidyadhipaha  patu nrisimho rasanam  mama
vaktram patv  indu-vadanam sada  prahlaada-vanditaha
10.  May Lord Narasimha, who is the knower of all sciences, protect my sense of  taste. May He whose face is beautiful as the full moon and who is offered  prayers by Prahlada Maharaja protect my face.
Nrisimha patu me  kantham skandhau bhu-bhrid ananta  krit
divyastra-shobhita-bhujaha nrisimhah patu me bhujaha
11.  May Lord Narasimha protect my throat. He is the sustainer of the earth and the  performer of unlimitedly wonderful activities. May He protect my shoulders. His  arms are resplendent with transcendental weapons. May He protect my  shoulders.
karau me  deva-varado nrisimhah patu  sarvataha
hridayam yogi-sadhyash  cha nivasam patu me  harih
12.  May the Lord, who bestows benedictions upon the demigods, protect my hands, and  may He protect me from all sides. May He who is achieved by the perfect yogis  protect my heart, and may Lord Hari protect my dwelling place.
madhyam patu  hiranyaksha vaksha-kukshi-vidaranaha
nabhim me patu  nriharihi sva-nabhi-brahma-samstutaha
13.  May He who ripped apart the chest and abdomen of the great demon HiraNyaaksha  protect my waist, and may Lord Nrihari protect my navel. He is offered prayers  by Lord Brahmaa, who has sprung from his own navel.
brahmanda-kotayah  katyam yasyasau patu me  katim
guhyam me patu  guhyanam mantranam  guhya-rupa-drik
14.  May He on whose hips rest all the universes protect my hips. May the Lord  protect my private parts. He is the knower of all mantras and all mysteries, but  He Himself is not visible.
uru manobhavah  patu januni  nara-ruupa-drik
janghe patu  dhara-dhara harta yo ‘sau  nri-keshari
15.  May He who is the original Cupid protect my thighs. May He who exhibits a  human-like form protect my knees. May the remover of the burden of the earth,  who appears in a form which is half-man and half-lion, protect my  calves.
sura-rajya-pradah  patu padau me  nriharishvarah
sahasra-shirsha-purushaha patu me sarvashas tanum
16.  May the bestower of heavenly opulence protect my feet. He is the Supreme  Controller in the form of a man and lion combined. May the thousand-headed  Supreme enjoyer protect my body from all sides and in all respects.
mahograh purvatah  patu maha-viragrajo  ‘ghnitaha
maha-vishnur dakshine  tu maha-jvalas tu  nairritaha
17.  May that most ferocious personality protect me from the east. May He who is  superior to the greatest heroes protect me from the southeast, which is presided  over by Agni. May the Supreme Vishnu protect me from the south, and may that  person of blazing luster protect me from the southwest.
pashchime patu  sarvesho dishi me  sarvatomukhaha
nrisimhah patu  vayavyam saumyam  bhushana-vigrahaha
18.  May the Lord of everything protect me from the west. His faces are everywhere,  so please may He protect me from this direction. May Lord Narasimha protect me  from the northwest, which is predominated by Vaayu, and may He whose form is in  itself the supreme ornament protect me from the north, where Soma  resides.
ishanyam patu bhadro  me sarva-mangala-dayakaha
samsara-bhayatah  patu mrityor mrityur  nrikeshari
19.  May the all-auspicious Lord, who Himself bestows all-auspiciousness, protect  from the northeast, the direction of the sun-god, and may He who is death  personified protect me from fear of the rotation of birth and death in this  material world.
idam  nrisimha-kavacham prahlada-mukha-manditam
bhaktiman yah  pathenaityam sarva-papaih  pramuchyate
20.  This Narasimha-kavacha has been ornamented by issuing from the mouth of Prahlada  Maharaja. A devotee who reads this becomes freed from all sins.
putravan dhanavan  loke dirghayur  upajayate
kamayate yam yam  kamam tam tam prapnoty  asamshayam
21.  Whatever one desires in this world he can attain without doubt. One can have  wealth, many sons, and a long life.
sarvatra jayam  apnoti sarvatra vijayii  bhavet
bhumyantariksha-divyanam grahanam vini varanam
22.  He becomes victorious who desires victory, and indeed becomes a conqueror. He  wards off the influence of all planets, earthly, heavenly, and everything in  between.
vrishchikoraga-sambhuta vishhapaharanam param
brahma-rakshasa-yakshanam durotsarana-karanam
23.  This is the supreme remedy for the poisonous effects of serpents and scorpions,  and Brahma-raakshasa ghosts and Yakshas are driven far away.
bhuje va tala-patre  va kavacham likhitam  shubham
kara-mule dhritam  yena sidhyeyuh  karma-siddhayaha
24.  One may write this most auspicious prayer on his arm, or inscribe it on a  palm-leaf and attach it to his wrist, and all his activities will become  perfect.
devasura-manushyeshhu svam svam eva jayam labhet
eka-sandhyam tri-sandhyam  va yah pathen niyato  naraha
25.  One who regularly chants this prayer, whether once or thrice (daily), he becomes  victorious whether among demigods, demons, or human beings.
sarva-mangala-mangalyam bhuktim muktim cha vindati
dva-trimshati-sahasrani pathet shuddhatmanam nrinam
26.  One who with purified heart recites this prayer 32,000 times attains the most  auspicious of all auspicious things, and material enjoyment and liberation are  already understood to be available to such a person.
kavachasyasya  mantrasya mantra-siddhih-prajayate
anena  mantra-rajena kritva bhasmabhir  mantranam
27.  This Kavacha-mantra is the king of all mantras. One attains by it what would be  attained by anointing oneself with ashes and chanting all other  mantras.
tilakam vinyased yas  tu tasya graha-bhayam  haret
tri-varam japamanas  tu dattam varyabhimantrya  cha
28.  Having marked ones body with tilaka, taking achamana with water,  and reciting this mantra three times, one will find that the fear of all  inauspicious planets is removed.
prasayed yo naro  mantram nrisimha-dhyanam  acharet
tasya rogah  pranashyanti ye cha syuh  kukshi-sambhavaha
29.  That person who recites this mantra, meditating upon Lord Narasimhadeva, has all  of his diseases vanquished, including those of the abdomen.
garjantam garjayantam  nija-bhuja-patalam sphotayantam hatantam rupyantam tapayantam divi bhuvi ditiyam kshepayantam  kshipantam
krandantam roshayantam  dishi dishi satantam samharantam bharantam vikshantam purnayantam kara-nikara-shatair divya-simham  namami
30.  Lord Narasimha roars loudly and causes others to roar. With His multitudes of  arms He tears the demons asunder and kills them in this way. He is always  seeking out and tormenting the demonic descendants of Diti, both on this earth  planet and in the higher planets, and He throws them down and scatters them. He  cries with great anger as He destroys the demons in all directions, yet with His  unlimited hands He sustains, protects, and nourishes the cosmic manifestation. I  offer my respectful obeisances to the Lord, who has assumed the form of a  transcendental lion.
iti shri brahmanda-purane  prahladoktam shri nrisimha-kavacham  sampurnam
Thus  ends the Narasimha-kavacha as it is described by Prahlada Maharaja in the  Brahmanda Purana.
