seeing through the eyes of scriptures

Ravinjay Prabhu asked:

Why are discussions of Lord Nrsimhadeva's post-destruction lila (per Atharva Veda) and his widely worshiped south Indian form of Ganda Bherunada widely ignored by Gaudiya Vaisnavas?

The answer is simple really:There is many manifestions of Lord Narasimha, and Ganda Bherunada is one of millions of forms of Lord Narasimha that manifest in the materiel universes, like waves in the Ocean. In Srimad Bhagavatam ,Sukadeva Goswami has mentioned some avatars. And in his Laghu Bhagavatamrta Srila Rupa Goswami has given more detailed information.Just like in Srimad Bhagavatam it is mentioned how Dhavantari manifested both during the churing of the ocean of Milk, but He also appeared on earth to bestow the science of Ayurveda.

As Gaudiya vaisnavas our focus is on Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He is also Lord Narasimha, and on some occasions He manifested this. One occasion is when 1000 names of Visnu was chanted and Gauranga assumed the mood of Lord Narasimha.Srivas Thakura was once scared of the muslims that decieded to kill him and prayed to Lord Narasimha, Lord Caitanya appeared and garantied that He was also Narasimha. And when Nrsimhananda Brahmacari wanted to see Gauranga assume the form of Lord Narasimha and accept His offering He did so.In Vaikuntha ,Lord Narasimha is a Visnu form, there is no "animal forms of the Lord there" this only takes place in the material universes.

In Narasimha palli in Mayapure, Bhaktivinoda Thakura had darshan of Lord Narasimha as described in his book Navadvipa Bhava Taranga, and Lord Narasimha blessed Him with Gauranga prema and Krsna prema.

We worship Lord Narasimha to remove our anarthas and obstacels in Bhakti, in some rare occasion to protect against the envious persons.Lord Narasimha being at Narasimha palli is more important than Ganda Bherunada.Ganda Bherunada is not accepting our prayer to get Krsna prema, but we can sure pray to this Ugra Aspect of Narasimha to uproot anarthas.

In Vrindavan devotees where worshipping Lord Narasimha is for Krsnas protection, the temple of Narasimha is still there in Nandagrama.

Every day mother Yasoda places Narasimha bija mantra on Krsnas body before she allows Him to go to the forest. So highly advanced Gaudiya vaisnavas pray for Krsnas protection (He is Svayam Bhagavan, but they do not see Him that way). This is far from the stage where one is scared of the material world and Lord Narasimha seems the only hope.Lord Caitanya (who is non different from Lord Narasimha) has asked us to chant Hare Krishna, 64 rounds a day ,for those unabel (or unwilling) Srila Prabhupada reduced it to minimum 16 rounds. If we want Lord Narasimhadevas full mercy, then we should chant 64 rounds of the Mahamantra every day.

And preach KC, go on sankirtana, Harinama and bookdistribtuion. We are not just armchairs philosophers.

Ganda Bherunada – Narasimha Incarnation of Lord Vishnu

Lord Narasimha as Ganda Bherunada (two-headed bird) is a rare incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is mainly worshipped in South India. Gandabherunada, or Gandha Bherunda Narasimha, is a combination of bird and animal with two heads and said to have manifested from Lord Narasimha as he was not able to control his anger. It is also believed that Ganda Bherunada incarnation was answer to Lord Shiva’s Sarabha form.

Ganda Bherunada is not mentioned in the Bhagavad Purana but is mentioned in the some regional scriptures and in some Puranas. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha (half-man half-lion) to annihilate Demon Hiranyakashipu. But after completing His divine mission, Narasimha could not control his anger and turned to destroy the universe. Lord Shiva took the form of Sarabha to pacify Narasimha. But Lord Narasimha took a more terrible form of bird-animal with two heads – Ganda Bherunda.

The most famous drawing of Ganda Bherunada is found in the Mysore Court. A bird of the form of Gandabherunada is the royal logo of Wodeyars, the former rulers of Mysore.

An idol of Ganda Bherunada is worshipped at Sri Yadagiri Temple near Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. There is a sculpture of Ganda Bherunada at Balligavi town in Karnataka.

Idols, paintings and sculptures of Ganda Bherunada are very rare and those that are available are mainly found in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

In our Gaudiya line the most important place of worship of Lord Narasimha is in Nandagrama and in Godruma (Narasimha palli) both is identical, Why is Narasimha being worshipped in Nandagrama ? Because Garga Muni asked Nanda Maharaja, that he had the worship of Lord Narasimha established in Nandagrama.Have you ever heard of any demons come to Nandagrama? Krsna kills the asuas somewhere else.So the ancient Narasimah Deity is still there in Nandagrama beng worshipped after 5000 year.Every day Mother Yasoda binds Narasimha bija mantras on Krsna before He goes cowhered herding ( it is in the Govinda lilamrta).
Krsna sometimes jokes that the gopis better be careful as He is “Narasimha -Krsna and “and if He really wants He can scratch them a lot with His nails as “Narasimha Krsna”.It is there in Dana Keli Cintamani by Srila Raghunath das Goswami.
In Godruma Lord Narasimah came after killing Hiranyakasipu and blessing Prahlada Maharaja. At Ahovalam he just washed His hands, Rakta kunda is still there. But in Narasimha palli Lord Narasimha took full bath and rested for a long time.Bhaktivinoda Thakura explains, the demigods build residence there.
Pradyumna Misra also known as Narasimhananda, could directly talk to Lord Narasimha, this is confirmed by Sril Prabhupada in the CC.Where did he stay in Navadvipa? In Jaiva Dharma Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura reveals this , his bhajan kurtir was a Narasimha palli. In Vrindavan and Navadvipa Lord Narasimha blesses one with Krsna prema, this is shown in the Navadvipa Bhava taranga when Bhaktivinoda Thakura gos to Narasimha palli and gets the mercy of Lord Narasimha:

Five Prayers to Lord Narasimha
by Bhaktivinoda Thakura

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura has written five beautiful prayers in “Sri Navadvipa Bhava Taranga” for receiving the mercy of Lord Narasimha. These prayers are certainly assurance to all sincere devotees that the worship of Lord Narasimha is purely in the line of aspiring love and devotion to Sri Sri Radha and Krsna. Those prayers are as follows.

e dusta hrdaye kama adi ripu chaya
kutinati pratisthasa sathya sada raya
hrdaya-sodhana ara krsnera vasana
nrsimha-carane mora ei to’ kamana

Within my sinful heart the six enemies headed by lust perpetually reside, as well as duplicity, the desire for fame, plus sheer cunning. At the lotus feet of Lord Narasimha, I hope that He will mercifully purify my heart and give me the desire to serve Lord Krsna.

kandiya nrsimha-pade magibo kakhana
nirapade navadvipe jugala-bhajana
bhaya bhaya paya yan’ra darsane se hari
prasanna hoibo kabe more daya kari

Weeping, I will beg at the lotus-feet of Lord Narasimha for the benediction of worshipping Radha and Krsna in Navadvipa, perfectly safe and free from all difficulties. When will this Lord Hari, Whose terrible form strikes fear into fear itself, ever become pleased and show me His mercy?

yadyapi bhisana murti dusta-jiva-prati
prahladadi krsna-bhakta-jane bhadra ati
kabe va prasanna ho’ye sa krpa-vacane
nirbhaya karibe ei mudha akincane

Even though Lord Narasimha is terrifying toward the sinful souls, He offers great auspiciousness unto the devotees of Lord Krsna headed by Prahlada Maharaja. When will He be pleased to speak words of compassion unto me, a worthless fool, and thereby make me fearless?

svacchande baiso he vatsa sri-gauranga-dhame
jugala-bhajana hau rati hau name
mama bhakta-krpa-bale vighna jabe dura
suddha cite bhajo radha-krsna-rasa-pura

He will say, “Dear child! Sit sown freely and live happily here in Sri Gauranga-dhama. May you nicely worship the Divine Couple, and may you develop loving attachment for Their Holy Names. By the mercy of My devotees, all obstacles are cast far away. With a purified heart, just perform the worship of Radha and Krsna, for such worship overflows with sweet nectar.”

ei boli’ kabe mora mastaka-upara
sviya sri-carana harse dharibe isvara
amani jugala-preme sattvika vikare
dharaya lutibo ami sri-nrsimha-dvare

Saying this, will that Lord delightedly place His own divine lotus-feet upon my head? I will experience sublime love for the Divine Couple Radha-Krsna and undergo the ecstatic transformations called sattvika. Falling on the ground, I will roll about at the door of Sri Narasimha’s temple.

(Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, - “Sri Navadvipa Bhava Taranga”, 36-40)

Thus for all Gaudiya Vaisnavas we are concerned with Lord Narasimha mainly in Vrindavan and Navadvipa
May Lord Narasimha kindly bless us all with ecstatic love for Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Radha Krsna .

This ancient temple of Lord Narasimha where the great sage Yadava under directions of Hanuman performed tapasya is located near to Hydrabad ,India. This took place in Treta Yuga, and Lord Narasimha manifested in 5 forms to him,Jwala, Yogananda, Gandabherunda, Ugra and Lakshminarasimha . First Yadava saw Lord Narasimha in His Ugra and Jwala forms..that is the very fierce forms of Lord Narasimha ,,Jwala referes to Lord Narasimha appears to be on fire, because flames of His Transendental prowess emanates from His body, like a fire.So Yadava was not very pleased with this frightful form so Lord Narasimha appeared as Yogananda Narasimha, the peaceful form of Lord Narasimha where He is in meditation , but this was also not fully pleasing to his devotee. So finally Lord Narasimha appeared as Laxmi Narasimha, that is real the main form of Lord Narasimha worshipped there.( After that Lord Narasimha manifested these 5 forms in selfmanifested Deity forms)
Here Lord Narasimha is known as Vaidya Narasimha, Lord Narasimha as a doctor, He removes the influence of mental disturbance, evil planets, black magic, bad karma etc.If one properly takes shelter of this holy place. And Lord Narasimha that eternally resides there.
SB 7.9.52: The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Prahlāda, most gentle one, best of the family of the asuras, all good fortune unto you. I am very much pleased with you. It is My pastime to fulfill the desires o f all living beings, and therefore you may ask from Me any benediction that you desire to be fulfilled.
SB 7.9.53: My dear Prahlāda, may you live a long time. One cannot appreciate or understand Me without pleasing Me, but one who has seen or pleased Me has nothing more for which to lament for his own satisfaction.
SB 7.9.54: My dear Prahlāda, you are very fortunate. Please know from Me that those who are very wise and highl y elevated try to please Me in all different modes of mellows, for I am the only person who can fulfill all the desires of everyone.
I pray Lord Narasimha may kindly bless us all and remove obstacels on the path of devotional service.
Jaya Yadagiri Narasimha ki jaya.

Ganda Bherunada Narasimha also appeared to the sage Yadava (not to be mistaken with king Yadu), the Deity is still there at Yadava Giri Narasimha near Hydrabad
