The Transcendental Pastimes of Laxmi Narasimha
BY: PAYONIDHI DAS
Oct 25, MARYLAND, USA (SUN) — Following is an email exchange between Bhakta Ravinjaya and myself, with his question about Sri Sri Laxmi Narasimha, and my reply.
"Dear Payonidhi Prabhu, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
… If you go to places in South India especially Ahobilam you can see erotic images of Nrsimha touching the breast of Chencu Lakshmi carved on the temple walls. There are also others but I lost those images I saved on my computer, therefore I do not know. The picture I attached is a deity of the couple. Nrsimha is also touching the breast here. Why is Nrsimha displayed so pervertedly like this?
Your Humble Servant,
Bhakta Ravinjay

Dear Bhakta Ravinjay
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Your questions are just amazing. What is the meaning of Chencu Laxmi? Who is She? I did a little Internet research and came on this amazing website about Ahovalam. There it is stated about Ahobilam:
"The temples at Ahobilam celebrate their Brahmotsavam in the month of Panguni, two weeks after Shivarathri. The Brahmotsavam draws a lot of people to the town and grand festivities are held for the 10 day long festival. The high point is of course the marriage of Shri Lakshmi Narasimha. It is believed that when Vishnu took the Narasimha avatara, Mahalakshmi was born in the Chenchu tribe. These tribes happen to be the local tribes of the region. Narasimha then married Chenchu Lakshmi and lived in the warm hospitality of the Chenchus. So fond of them did he become that when time came for them to go back to Vaikuntha, Narasimha is said to have refused to do so. The Kalyana utsava is therefore the highlight for the tribes of the mountains.
One particular Chenchu tribe, the Padmasalis claim themselves to be the parent clan of Chenchu Lakshmi, and hold themselves responsible for her marriage. Every year one person is chosen by lot to act as the father for Chenchu Lakshmi and give her away in marriage to Malolan. The Nishchayathartham or the engagement is a sight to behold. The utsavars of both the Lord and the Thayar are brought out as the negotiations of marriage are held between the Padmasalis and the lord himself. Such is the love that the tribes have for their Lord. It is believed to be the greatest honor to give away Chenchu Lakshmi in marriage to Sri Malolan."
One day I like to go and find that place, I would like to witness this "marriage of Chenchu Laxmi to Lord Narasimha" as reenacted yearly there, somewhere close to Ahobilam. How amazing.
Regarding your question, "Nrsimha is also touching the breast here. Why is Nrsimha displayed so pervertedly like this?"
Do you remember in Srimad Bhagavatam when Pariksit Maharaja asked about the gopis in the Rasa dance?
SB 10.29.12: "Sri Pariksit Maharaja said: O sage, the gopis knew Krsna only as their lover, not as the Supreme Absolute Truth. So how could these girls, their minds caught up in the waves of the modes of nature, free themselves from material attachment?
SB 10.29.13: Sukadeva Gosvami said: This point was explained to you previously. Since even Sisupala, who hated Krsna, achieved perfection, then what to speak of the Lord's dear devotees.
SB 10.29.14: O King, the Supreme Lord is inexhaustible and immeasurable, and He is untouched by the material modes because He is their controller. His personal appearance in this world is meant for bestowing the highest benefit on humanity.
SB 10.29.15: Persons who constantly direct their lust, anger, fear, protective affection, feeling of impersonal oneness or friendship toward Lord Hari are sure to become absorbed in thought of Him. (kindly see this full purport)
SB 10.29.16: You should not be so astonished by Krsna, the unborn master of all masters of mystic power, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. After all, it is the Lord who liberates this world."
From the purport to SB 10.29.15:
"Srila Madhvacarya has quoted the following verses from the Varaha Puran?a:
patitvena sriyopasyo
brahman?a me piteti ca
pitamahatayanyes?am´
tridasanam´ janardanah?
"The goddess Laks?mi worships Lord Janardana as her husband, Lord Brahma worships Him as his father, and the other demigods worship Him as their grandfather."
Those are not liberated from lust and other material qualities like the example is given in this purport SB 10.29.15 quoted by Srila Madhavacarya can not have conjugal love with the Supreme Lord ,this is the minimum qualification:
bhaktya hi nitya-kamitvam´
na tu muktim´ vina bhavet
atah? kamitaya vapi
muktir bhaktimatam´ harau
"Eternal conjugal attraction to Kr?s?n?a, expressed in pure devotional service, cannot develop in one who is not already liberated. Thus those who are devoted to Lord Hari, even in conjugal attraction, are already liberated .
sneha-bhaktah? sada devah?
kamitsenapsara-striyah?
kascit kascin na kamena
bhaktya kevalayaiva tu
"The demigods are always affectionately devoted to the Lord, and the young ladies of heaven called Apsaras have lusty feelings toward Him, although some of them have pure devotion for Him untainted by material lust. Only these latter Apsaras are ready…"
And also, if you read the 5th Canto chapter 18.16 to 23 you see how Laxmi has also advised all women in this world to accept Lord Visnu as their husbands (Lord Narasimha as well can be seen in that light). So there is nothing astonishing in Lord Narasimha touching the breast of His wife Chenchu Laxmi, conjugal love exists in the spiritual world. And Lord Visnu and Krsna are the Supreme enjoyers. How this conjugal love manifests in Vaikunatha I have no idea of, I have never seen it in sastra. But it is certainly there with Krsna and His queens of Dvaraka. Krsna begot so many children with his 16,108 wives. Krsna showed the example of an ideal grhastha that only has sex with His wife to beget children, though in His form of Maha Visnu He impregnates material nature simply by His glance. These are His Divine lilas.
In Vrindavan Krsna also has conjugal love with Radharani and the sakhis, but it is on a transcendental platform, and hard for us conditioned souls to fathom as we struggle as sadhakas to become free from lust and other material qualities. In Caitanya-caritamrta this is described as iron and gold, lust and spiritual love (see also SB 5.18 .8 to14, Prahlada's other prayers in SB). In Krsna lila, the manjaris like Rupa Goswami may witness Radha Krsna's intimate conjugal love, but they derive more transcendental pleasure serving the divine couple than if Krsna would kiss and touch them. These things are on the topmost level of understanding. We are trying to remember constantly how this body is not us and act on the spiritual platform. But know the relationship of Laksmi Narasimha is fully transcendental, and just pay obeisances to even Lord Narasimha touching Laxmi's breasts. And remember the prayers of Prahlada in the 5th Canto, to pray to Lord Narasimha to tear lust and anger etc. out of our heart and make us non-envious, and so on, and fully manifest in our heart.
I hope you understand all this. I pray Lord Narasimha and Chenchu Laksmidevi may be kind and place Their lotus hands on our heads.
Maybe you are familiar with the prayer of Sankacarya to Laksmi Narasimha?
Sri Lakshmi-Narasimha karuna-rasa-stotra
This was written by Adi Shankaracharya for the mercy of Sri Sri Lakshmi-Narasimha. It reflects the same devotional mood as his Govindashtakam and Prabhodashudhakara, and does not hold any of his impersonalistic teachings.

Lord, Your form is all beautiful because you are the master of the goddess of fortune. You reside in the ocean of milk, and You carry the Sudarshana disc in Your hand. Your all-auspicious form is made even more resplendent by the jewel-like body of Anantadeva, the king of serpents upon whom You rest. You are the eternal deliverer from the ocean of birth and death for all those who seek Your shelter and You are the master of all mystics. O Lakshmi-Nrisimha, please bless me with the touch of Your lotus hands.

The conditioned soul suffers on the path of repeated birth and death exactly like one caught in a forest fire. Being fearful, his body burnt by the licking flames, he cries most pitiably. Just as one tormented by a forest fire may take shelter in a pond. Your lotus feet are just like a pond giving refuge to the surrendered soul from the forest fire of samsara. O Lakshmi-Nrisimha, please bless me with the touch of Your lotus hands.

And just as the fish is caught trembling, and his head is cut off, so my real consciousness is lost as I am punished by the material nature. O Lakshmi-Nrisimha, please bless me with the touch of Your lotus hands.

I have been bitten by the tens of millions of terrible sharp fangs of the snake of material existence. Having been injected with its powerful poison, I have lost my consciousness as the eternal servant of Krishna. The best remedy for snakebite is nectar, therefore O Lord Shauri, You reside in the ocean of nectar and Your carrier is Garuda the great enemy of snakes. O Lakshmi-Nrisimha, please bless me with the touch of Your lotus hands.

The tree of samsara, or material existence, is sprouted from the seed of sinful desire. The unlimited reactions to fruitive activities are its branches, the senses are its leaves and its flowers is Cupid's attraction of sex desire. O merciful one, I climbed up this tree but I have only obtained the fruit of misery and am now fallen. O Lakshmi-Nrisimha, please bless me with the touch of Your lotus hands.

This prayer, bestowing auspiciousness in this world, has been composed by Shankaracharya, who is a honeybee in the lotus flower of the feet of Sri-Sri Lakshmi-Nrisimha. Those who read this prayer with devotion to Lord Krishna attain the shelter of Sri Sri Lakshmi-Nrisimha's lotus feet and also attain their eternal spiritual form, which is never annihilated.
The transcendental bodies and pastimes of Laxmi Narasimha are free from all pervertedness that exists in the conditioned soul imitating Isvara and isvari, thus all jivas are advised to give up their perverted material activities and seek shelter of Laxmi Narasimha, this will qualify us to one day serve Radha Krsna in Vrindavana and even understand and realize books like Nikunja keli Virudavali by Srila Visvanatha Chakravati.
Your servant,
Payonidhi das
